depending on the walking wounded - Bond, Tuffey, Oram & Astle, I'd expect to see most of the same batting lineup, with perhaps Astle sitting out & Papps coming in - alternatively Richardson to have a rest.........

I'd also pick Mills will be getting a start along with Bond & Martin & Vettori as the main bowlers, with Cairns to get more of the ball - as I think Oram at least will be rested to recover.................

Rest Richardson? What's the point of bringing someone half way around the world, watching them perform and then resting him immediately? No way.

Rest Astle? Is he actually even injured? He had the flu, and he showed he's still capable of taking runs after that with a nice 49.

Rest Oram? Not sure about his injury. It'd be a true shame to rest him, but if he needs it I guess we have no choice.

The only people that I know are suffering slightly are Mills, Bond, Tuffey and Oram. I haven't heard anything about the rest of them, and I can't imagine they'd be rested for the sake of spending a lot of time at the crease (ie, Richardson). That's international cricket - if you need a rest without being injured, you shouldn't be playing at this level. Not to mention that 14 man squad again.

Surely you jest.

Papps has to come in because you ought to drop McMillan, who is a complete waste of space. His only decent innings in the last three years have been two against the Bangles (wa-hey!) and an 82 while Styris was going bonkers at the other end and the bowlers were shellshocked.

I gather it's been announced that Bond won't make it to Headingley.

Cheers,

Mike

Great photos Neil! :)

Would you mind if I create a page for them in the Cricket Photos section on CW?

Surely McMillan has to go. He's done hardly anything of late and I can't really see him doing anything soon. He has far too many brain explosions, getting out foolishly when NZ can least afford it. I would bring in Papps for him. Fleming just isn't meant to be a test opener. He just isn't. Although in saying that he has 'effectively' opened'' on several occasions...

Don't underestimate how much batting for 13 hours thrashes you mentally.

Besides, the Black Caps want to to be giving their middle-order as much time at the crease as possible, one of the things Rigger is clearly worst at.

"You mean you don't want me to blunt these county bowlers for you? You were going to retire me even if I did? What kind of first-class game is this!!"

2003/04 season macca played in 6 out of the 7 tests we played, missed one due to injury.he averaged 65.16, so i think he is justified in keeping his spot

Although his career average outside NZ and India is just 27.

McMillan will always look great when he can bully the spinners, or when medium-pacers are bouncing twice before they reach the keeper. Doing well against the current English attack on their own turf though will require him to excel outside his comfort zone, which is something we don't see from him enough.

with the comparisons of Richardson & Boycott, did Geoffrey have as much trouble re opening partners as Richardson?????
No - John Edrich at the other end, Ken Barrington to come in at 3, Cowdrey at 4, Graveney... now look what you've done. I'll be wheeling out Ted Dexter in a minute.
