He definitely hit it at the same time, but that's neither here nor there. Umpire didn't give it, and I'm not Indian.Neil Pickup said:OK, In brief as I need to get back off to the TV room...
Good toss to win, little early swing, poor lines from Hoggard and Harmison, too much leg stump, easy picking, Jones and Flintoff impressive, Richardson and Fleming don't get big enough strides in, playing and missing. Fleming's patience fails, good catch Strauss, Astle gets lucky with the caught behind shout, I'd have given it, bat hit pad for sure but did it nick the ball at the same time?
C'mon England!
First home test, at lords...i can forgive a fewe mistakes and he has held on to all the ones that mattered!luckyeddie said:He definitely hit it at the same time, but that's neither here nor there. Umpire didn't give it, and I'm not Indian.
The biggest disappointment for me from an England perspective is Geraint Jones - shoddy keeping, I'm sorry to say.
I think I must be one of the only people who thinks that McMillan is slow to get off the mark more often than he is fast. He gets out to odd shots, yes - but that doesn't always mean he's fast up front. He's just a bit of an agricultural player, I guess.anzac said:bugger - 2 wickets in 2 overs & now Macca needs to think about the BIG picture b4 launching himself at the bowling...............
I hope this is as far as the predictable mini collapse goes...........
It is, by all accounts, a truly dreadful place for keepers. The ball always seems to die - then when you expect it to, it does the opposite.SpaceMonkey said:First home test, at lords...i can forgive a fewe mistakes and he has held on to all the ones that mattered!
I have noticed that Jones uses (unsurprisingly) the 'Australian' way of keeping by keeping his body still and taking the ball to the side of him at times. I remember Jack Russell doing an Acadamy session (on Ch4 during lunch on a test match i think) where he said that way of keeping didnt suit English Conditions as if the ball swung after passing the batsmen you couldnt adjust well enough to take the ball cleanly as you didnt have the gloves under your eyes and it was better to move the entire body into line of the ball when you took it.luckyeddie said:It is, by all accounts, a truly dreadful place for keepers. Care to fill me in on which of the following is correct, given that I'm still getting the hang of grounds and such: Either the English bowlers are playing brilliantly, the NZ'ers are very rusty or this track isn't designed for making runs. Or I'm just expecting too much of the NZ'ers. But they're looking at around 250 at the end of play right now, and I always thought that if you want to really do something in a match, you should score 300 in the first day...PY said:Macca - GONE
Bit worrying that it kept low though.
I think it's simply the NZ batsman scoring quite slow Richardson is on like 60 from 200 balls so kinda shows, the English bowlers have been very hit or miss so they can't really be credited for keeping it ultra tight, and it's more of a batsman wicket at present too.Loony BoB said:Care to fill me in on which of the following is correct, given that I'm still getting the hang of grounds and such: Either the English bowlers are playing brilliantly, the NZ'ers are very rusty or this track isn't designed for making runs. england have bowled pretty well, flintoff in particular has been brilliant and jones hasnt done too badly either. i think theres a little bit in the pitch, its not completely flat like antigua and a good bowler will get wickets on it.Loony BoB said:Care to fill me in on which of the following is correct, given that I'm still getting the hang of grounds and such: Either the English bowlers are playing brilliantly, the NZ'ers are very rusty or this track isn't designed for making runs. I'm watching the game on UK Ch4, and Boyks is on their commentary team.tooextracool said:i like richardson, hes played brilliantly and i dont think ive ever seen a better leaver than him. he just waits for the bad ball, smacks it and then goes back into defensive mode again.
