Yeah, I think Vettori is a different kettle of fish. The way he's just 'putting it there' (as the Telegraph's Scyld Berry said this morning) suggests Vettori has never really recovered.

Bond is just rusty. He's bowling quick from all reports but mostly too short with erratic lines. We all know from one of Shoaib or Brett Lee's bad days that fast bowlers can go for plenty when they're slightly off, so I wouldn't be too concerned about Bond yet.

Meanwhile, Kent (the county team) are on 109/0. Sigh.
As I feared, we're back to the full-cream milk being dished up by Vettori and Styris these days. It'll be embarrassing if Fleming goes back to this tactic in the tests (the Barmy Army would work on a chant), but it's nice that Vettori's given us prior warning he'll be in the starting XI.

Vettori has been given the big hook, and replaced by Rigger! 1 over for 8 though probably won't get him another chance after lunch.

NZ tanking it against an understrength county side. :thumbdown

Update:

Kent 161/0 @ Lunch - What is the point really of taking lunch here? With just over 20 runs to finish the game.

R.Key 94*
D.Fulton 63*

Okay everyone, here's another: Will NZ take a wicket? I'm guessing no. *dies*

By bringing Richardson on, I think NZ had hopes of ending it before being forced to endure the indignity of lunch. Rigger had too much pride for that though!

Even with a friendly team talk from Braces, I'm also saying no wickets.

why is giles a certainity though?i think his record in england speak for himself....id rather have collingwood, strauss or maybe even another fast bowler in there instead of him

They want a spinner - he is the best around and is also a handy number 8 to solidify the lower-middle order.

5 fast bowlers are never needed.

I would prefer an extra bat myself, but if we're playing the spinner, Giles is the one.

i am surprised anderson got picked.....IMO hes not good enough to be part of the squad. i find it hard to understand why giles is in there either...i think his average on home soil leaves a lot to be desired
ive also heard that jones' keeping wasnt quite upto the mark in the kent vs NZ game?

Well, hs only competitor is a place too high at 7, and can't bat any lower if they want the 4 + 1 bowling attack...

Plus we've drawn 7 of our last 11 tests that weren't on joke pitches, and even the reborn English side don't exactly strike me as an early-series aggressor.

No, we waited until the Second innings in the 1st Test against the Windies!!! ;)

Pff...the West Indies. Even we were an early-series aggressor against them!

Of course, being the farm boys who get given the two-test series, that's kind of imperative against sides you know you're better than. Right now I think we'd be delighted to get out of Lord's still at 0-0.

Is there a chance for Key if he has an Ed Smith '03 season? Was never too keen on the chubmeister but if he continues this form.....

It's kind of hard to compare anything these days. For example...

NZ draw with South Africa and lose to Kent. This would imply that South Africa would lose to Kent, and also that NZ and SA would both lose to SA.

England draw the Windies on ODI's and the Windies are threatened by Bangladesh. This would imply that England would be troubled by Bangladesh too. This would also imply that NZ and SA would be troubled even more so - and the odds would be on Bangladesh to win.

So it would be something like this, all up...

England
West Indies
Bangladesh & Kent
New Zealand & South Africa

:D
