You said yourself in your post people have lost jobs due to crap social media posting for years, so why is cancel culture now a thing, it's just a meaningless catchphrase.
Good question. It's undeniable that it's prevalence has sky-rocketed over the last decade. Which is probably why it has now been given a catchy name, also to help people "fight" against it.

Whether or not it's a problem is debatable, some people undoubtedly see it as a good thing. I was responding in the context of Spark's comment about it not being a fair punishment. If punishments being dished out aren't fair then it's a problem.

It does seem fair though if it is just one match, again we have to see this play out, if it's more than that I think it will be excessive.

My point was more that the nature of the process means that it's not clear to me what the punishment actually is right now, which in itself is unfair because being vague is capricious all on its own. I don't have any problem with him being scratched out of a single Test match, I think that's actually a reasonable and proportionate response. If the ECB came out tomorrow and said "yadda yadda yadda we've looked into it, it's unacceptable, Olly will miss the next game but we're confident he's learned his lesson and this sends a strong signal to Not Do This and we're looking forward to moving on and letting Olly grow into a productive international career etc etc" and drew a line under it after the ban that would be entirely fine by me.

The point is that Gillespie knows the guy well and is prominent in the area of racial tolerance in sports

If he’s okay with who Robinson is as a 27yo man then I am not going to bash him for something that he did as a kid

This is a PR exercise from the ECB
Ahh, the old one of my best mates is black, even though he isn't argument, Kudos.

How is it a punishment though? He made these comments 8 years ago as a teenager, there's no indication that he is in any way racist and that a punishment is going to help in any way. If it's to punish him for being stupid and not deleting old comments then at least that's logical.

Santner and CDG combination apart we did a great job. With all the quarantine in place, bio bubble, short on red ball match practice did a commendable job. England were will behind the game all days of the test match at home. That augurs very well for the wtc finals. Bowling is in good form and batting will take care of itself no doubt.

I think I've said this before, but in the end it's pretty hard for a board that keeps on parroting anti-racist, anti-***ist, anti-bullying messages to let someone slide totally when they did the opposite in their tweets, whilst a full-grown adult and contracted to a pro cricket team.

The hope I'm guessing is giving a meaningful message to youngsters not to do these things, BTW I've seen some "interesting" social media posts from young bucks of the team I support, which I think is unwise. to paraphrase Nike "just don't do it".

I mean in actuality the only terrible way this will affect anyone is that they stop posting like dicks, which doesn't seem a bad trade off for a one match ban, if that's all it will be.

I don't really agree with the ban but I think the point grecian makes is a good one. If you're coming of age and are a decent sportsman you might think twice about what you hit send on when you see this. Similar happened to a footballer, Andre Gray, a few years back. Difference was I think he was 14 at the time so it definitely seemed harsher but this is what you leave yourself open to.

A mate of mine from school stood to become an MP in 2019 and before that he became a local councillor for a short while. At the time he started to get involved in that way, he wiped all of his socials and started again. Not like he'd have had anything like this on there but he just felt it his best route. Probably a decent step for anyone stepping into public view.

My political party actually has a record of my worst forum posts. Throwing Stuff didn't even make the top 20.

It's a thing, whatever term you call it. The outraged 'mob' on social media, baying for blood. It's a new thing, and it's a thing - just because you say over and over it's not, doesn't make it so.

This isn't anything new. People have been losing jobs due to historical social media posts for years now, and it's almost never a fair or just response, and is almost 100% of the time just an organisation trying to appease a (sometimes imaginary) baying mob.

Cancel culture is a problem, but then so is being a dumb **** that left stupid comments he made as a kid undeleted on twitter (not to mention posting them in the first place).
A lot of people seem to attribute part of the blame to the ECB, and in particular their media/comms team for not having the foresight to delete it. So why aren't they in the gun publicly?

Again only ones baying in here seem to be on your side.

Yeah the ECB need to be blamed for not deleting someone elses tweets, yeah let's cancel them, the ****ers.

The trouble is you're arguing with someone who perceives reality based on their political views.

That wasn't me that suggested they were to be blamed. It was other posters in here, Michael Vaughan etc. In fact GIMH just echoed the exact sentiment.

OK, might let it lie then.

Whether or not it exists is not debatable. We are literally talking about an occurrence of it right now. I thought we'd established that.

You said you don't get why it's been given a "catchy name", why is this extending to you claiming it's "not a thing"?
