Good question. It's undeniable that it's prevalence has sky-rocketed over the last decade. Which is probably why it has now been given a catchy name, also to help people "fight" against it.You said yourself in your post people have lost jobs due to crap social media posting for years, so why is cancel culture now a thing, it's just a meaningless catchphrase.
Whether or not it's a problem is debatable, some people undoubtedly see it as a good thing. I was responding in the context of Spark's comment about it not being a fair punishment. If punishments being dished out aren't fair then it's a problem.
