Truly amazing how much he has declined - an embarrassment to no. 11s the world over atm
Quite possibly the greatest decline in a player ever in test cricket. From a genuine number 8 who averaged mid 20's to a genuine number 11 is some effort. You see players improve the other way but not often to decline so much so quickly.

NZ to collapse to the new ball today. 70/5 by lunch.
Unlikely.

Odd match situation, as we'd have taken 389 at mid-day yesterday, ditto NZ at the start of the final over yesterday.

What's the view about McCullum putting us in? Cricinfo described it as brave captaincy at the time, but that struck me as some lazy journo reckoning in must have been great because it was McCullum, whereas Cook taking the same decision would have been slaughtered because he's Cook.

It's probably the most extreme example. Gough and DeFreitas also declined after promising starts, but they had never been as good as Broad used to be. And never became as bad as he has become.
It's a shame that Cook doesn't have the balls to put Broad at 11 nowadays.

Impressed with Latham so far - tidy economical movements, straight bat and compact. England just starting to hone in on offstump where he often nicks off - probably haven't bowled enough there to him yet.

Guptill will score runs while he's in but is defending to mid wicket a lot, which looks suspect.

Sounds like an encouraging first over from Wood.

Cricinfo had him clocked at 92mph for one delivery, which makes a rare change nowadays.

Quite like Wood - amazing he can generate that pace from such a short runnup, when he's not hugely tall and is quite slight compared to a lot of fast bowlers. Is clearly just made of elastic.
