I think the figure Howsie arrived at is his average when you remove tests at ‘neutral’ venues, namely vs Pak in the UAE and India in the WTC final. Which is a bit convenient, considering HN’s one great away series was the one against Pak in 2018, and the UAE was a fortress for them.

Was a solid player then, but doesn’t change the fact that he’s been sub-standard for a long time now, especially when he’s not being helped along by opposition fielders.

I think Bangladesh will finish mid table this test cycle and get a few scalps at home. Should have beaten India last go around.

Excited to see what a healthy Ebadot can bring to this bowling attack.

This is looking like a very strong performance from Bangladesh, and one we're increasingly used to seeing from them at home. Very impressive in the wake of various retirements, laziness and sooking from some of their best ever players in Shakib, Tamim and Mamudullah. They've quietly worked away to create some great depth of test standard players, though as ever the pace bowling stocks are thin. The one bloke has done a good job this game though haha.

Mitchell's career is convincing me that if you're a batsman who is 6 foot 2 or taller, the only thing you need to do is walk down the track every ball and bosh the **** back over his head.

He goes a bit straighter than the last bloke to do this (Matthew Hayden) which theoretically makes him more suited to the top order, but Hayden's crease play was way better than Mitchell's.

If we were to shuffle the order around I think Conway should remain in the top 3. I really don't want him starting against spin, especially part time spin which he seems to have a drama with even in Shield. He's been good against spin in SENA and Pakistan but batting against the pacers is his stronger suit imo.

I think I've said this before but I don't think shifting Latham down will solve the starts problem. He's not fluking his way to 40-80 against the best teams in SENA conditions, he looks great for a couple of hours and then the self destruct button lights up and he starts getting streaky.

I think we need a debut ton from Sodhi to get there lol. He has got a few 50s before and looked quite good doing it, but this would be quite the circumstances to convert one haha.

Don't know if I've ever seen a better player of the reverse sweep than Mitchell. It's actually been his go to run scoring shot in this test, and he's executed it perfectly almost every time, even when the line of the ball is all wrong for the shot.

Latham has to be the most frustrating player I've watched. Has every shot, capable of playing big innings, defensively compact and probably the best technical player of spin to ever wear a black cap, but just keeps underwhelming. I remember after his debut year thinking we'd found a guy who was going to be the Dravid to KW's Tendulkar. Not sure where he goes from here, he's always averaged 40+ which is nye-on unheard of for a kiwi opener, and he does play the odd gem even against good bowling attacks, but it's plain that he hit his ceiling 9 years ago.

Latham has been a stable, credible presence at the top of the order. The way he has cashed in against weaker opposition has won him plaudits & enabled the Blacks Caps to put weaker teams to the sword at times. Unfortunately he just does not stand up against some of the stronger teams that we benchmark ourselves against: he has never scored a century against Australia, South Africa, or India. He’s played 13 tests against England for 1 century. No doubt he wants to play well against the top teams, but something mentally or technically is apparently inhibiting him from doing so.
He has absolutely plundered Bang / SL / Pak attacks, mainly on NZ grounds where he loves batting (and in the UAE vs Pak early in his career) for a haul of 10 centuries against those opponents.

I can only assume at this stage it's a mental thing. It's like he just doesn't actually care at times. The classic mental clock out he gets between 60 and 80 but it's like if the runs don't come easy early he doesn't bother. It's immensely frustrating.

I reckon the bloke cares, he's a whole-hearted passionate NZer and team man. He'd be mortified by his failures. It's a bit like Guptill as a test cricketer: great bloke, consistent scores against minnows, not technically up to it against the moving red ball & the quality seam attacks of the big boys.
