*Official* New Zealand in Australia 2019/20

Away record is one of the best out there, leaves Australia's for dust.
Since they last toured Oz, only notable away achievement was beating Pakistan. Lost In SA, whitewashed in India and could only draw against a weak SL lineup.

Sure Australia's away record is dismal, but they've been mid-table in the rankings and NZ are considerably higher; I thought there would be more notable achievements outside NZ in recent years than they've shown.

I guess I'm tired of hearing how NZ 'punch above their weight' when they tour Oz (literally heard that on the radio on Day 1). With the odd exception, that hasn't been the case this century. Invariably put in limp efforts on the opening Test like this.

No, we've crumbled in Australia pretty much every time since the good 2001 series. Whoever is saying that is incorrect.

But that doesn't mean we are rubbish and have got to number two by feasting on minnows.

Losing away to SA (a few years ago, may go differently now) and India is pretty common for all sides.

I hope we improve or the commentary is only going to get worse.

It's going to go from hyping our players up as competitive to sell the series to patronizing and nationalistic with how amazing Aus is.

I think it's kind of inevitable the rankings will be called into question everytime a side doesn't live up to them. I remember Australia being ranked number one after the 2013/14 season after the ashes and that win against South Africa (coming soon on the heels of heavy away defeats in England and India). They then proceeded to be completely blown away in the UAE and similar reactions were generated then. I think it just shows how there's not been a lot to seperate the top 5 teams of late, and how difficult it is to be away from home.

FWIW you could wonder whether NZ are actually number 2, but the achievement does indicate long term consistency, including overseas. Just a pity they just show it much in Australia, hope the next two tests are a different story.

If Smith gets at least 49 runs here, Root, Kohli and him would be the top three non-retired run scorers.

But Taylor's ahead of him and Warner isn't far behind. Kohli is only 100 ahead of Taylor. That top 5 order could change a bit in the next few weeks.
Yeah he needs 49 to get ahead of Taylor. Warner and Ross should retire before these guys - would be really nice to see their positions moving around - even Kane's not that far behind.

8 sessions to go. If Australia scores 300 in 3 sessions that leaves NZ 5 sessions to bat to chase 550, so 5 sessions of survival. At least the ball will be old at night on day 4. Will Jeet Raval be batting for his test career?

Even if we get crushed my one hope is to not see a Warner century celebration.

True. It doesn't help in this case that they've gone in here with no warm-up matches. I can't remember that happening on a NZ tour to Australia before.

Was there some cosmic divine force that guaranteed that Hazlewood would get injured in the 2nd over he bowled? Otherwise this logic makes no sense.
I don't think he injured the hammy when batting. Perhaps he had muesli for brekky on Thurs and would have bowled all day, but had bacon and eggs on Fri and that triggered the hammy strain? Whatever.

Fact is that Hazelwood was injured in the 2nd over he bowled in this match. And I was seriously interested in what other posters thought may have happened if NZ batted first against 2 quicks + Lyon + part timers.

It's almost as if soft tissue muscle injuries have a great deal of (bad) luck involved and if you change one prior event that much you shouldn't assume that subsequent (chance-based) events will occur in exactly the same way.

Based on what I’ve seen so far, I’d say they would have been rolled for about 166...
