***Official*** New Zealand in Australia 2011

Why do you think this is a series you should not lose? Away from home against a team that's better than New Zealand...
Because our batsmen are better than their bowlers.

Looking at the records of our batsmen, is it acceptable for test standard batsmen to collapse to a side playing two debutants in a four man attack?

A New Zealand series win was always going to be very hard with our bowling unit, but I will be extremely disappointed if we lose.

You definitely can't pin your hopes on getting a 0-0 in Australia, far too much pace and carry in the pitches. Even with a couple of debutants I don't think the Aussie attack is so bad that the third-tier Kiwi batting lineup can just score runs indefinitely.

How do you know that though? Just because they are debutants doesn't make them bad bowlers, or at least worse than your batsmen. Cummins was a debutant as well, and look how he fared.

Well of course no one is going to bat for five days, but a top five averaging over or around 40 with Vettori to come should be the favourites to see off an bowling line up picked on potential.

McCullum, Ryder and Taylor threw their wickets away in the first innings (as did Vettori, but he at least got to 96 first), and if the batting continues like the first innings (which tbf, we still have three innings to bat in the series) then I think NZ fans can rightly be furious.

It doesn't make them automatically bad, but really, if Doug Bracewell blasts you to living hell next innings, will you be furious?

An international standard batting line up is rightly expected to see off an inexperienced bowling line up. Whether it happens or not is completely different, but it is what is expected of the batting,

What's CPL?
A simming league. But the league's player ratings to begin with are made by Cribb, who has all kinds of wacky stats programs that give the player their rating. Every countries domestic scene is weighted according to its level and stats are tweaked to be more accurate and at the end of the day this NZ > this Aus.

Yeah I think that's true, but imo the answer to the question "is it acceptable for test standard batsmen to collapse to a side playing two debutants in a four man attack?" is yes. Players picked on potential can often peform to their potential. Even if just one out of Pattinson and Starc peformed well, you can add that to the two other bowlers Siddle and Lyon who should be able to challenge your batsmen + the fact it is an away game at the Gabba + the added pressure of knowing the better Aus batting line up will likely pile on more runs and you have a tricky situation for NZ. I think an Aus series win was still quite comfortably the favourite here, but in syaing that it is also probably NZ's best chance to win (or at least draw) in Aus for a long time (doesn't mean it is that likely though).

I already don't like CPL then haha...

If he actually bowled really well and destroyed us I honestly wouldn't be angry, or at least no more than just beyond the normal disappointment of losing a match. Just as I don't think you should be particularly miffed if either of these debutants do the same. If your batsmen play mostly **** shots though and are the architects of their own demise, then sure you have the right to be pissed off.

I may be wrong, but I don't Ponting's average in the last couple of years has been that bad, it's more a lack of hundreds.
I was reading that he averages less than Vettori in the last 4 years, around 39 to Vettori's 40. In the last 2 years it's gone down to 34.

Can't see his style of play being better suited to anything but opening tbh. Don't know enough about NZ domestic cricket to know if you have better alternatives, but I'd assume there isn't given he one of your best bats.

McCullum, Ryder and Taylor throw their wickets away all the time. It's their trademark. You can be furious if you want but I don't think you can be surprised.

Well, I just looked at his stats as an opener and he is averaging over 50, so I don't think there is much to complain about there unless they are grossly misleading!
