Yeah Pattinson looks a real prospect. Seems to have a naturally attacking length, good action, and a good outswinger. Quick too.

Think he's had injury problems too though.

It's quite suprising he is injury prone, but I guess it can happen to anyone. His action looks very fluid to me, unlike Cummins whose action looks like it would be incredibly tolling on the body. Really hope Pattinson doesn't get caught up in the super-agro 'bowl a million short balls' mentality that Siddle has adopted though, cause he has a tendency to do that already. It's great he has so much time on his side though, and I reckon he'll probably end up being the really good bowler Siddle could have been (but probably won't end up being).

IMO, Pattinson has every bit as much potential as Cummins who is far from being the finished article

Id actually go as far as to say that both Pattinson and Starc have better actions than the youngster

Not even close. Doesn't get much movement and his length and line is all over the place.
Getting more movement is something he will need to improve on, but if he learns to bowl a more full length consistently it should really help in swinging it more. I disagree that he is all over the place though. He is actually pretty consistent in his lengths etc. already, they just tend to be on the shortish side. You don't have a FC economy of 2.96 for nothing though, and he normally doesn't bowl half as much lose stuff like in the first innings spray fest (clearly was pretty nervous).

Idk I don't really like Starc's action, but Pattinson's is very smooth. Cummins is in a different league though, he has the control and smarts with all those other things, a real natural talent. I don't think his action will hamper him in the future if he already has good control at 18.

Pattinson actually does spray it a bit domestically, tbh. He has a low economy rate because he tends to bowl a defensive length, and because his random pies are often way down leg and not punished.

He's been a reasonably miserly bowler domestically but he's not been an accurate one or one to build pressure by bowling good areas. He's got his wickets mainly with jaffas.

Not really what I'd calling spraying it. He'll bowl the occasional ball which is pretty far off the mark (pretty similar to Cummins really, and what you'd expect from bowlers so inexperienced), but on the whole he knows where is trying to bowl. I agree he needs to bowl in better areas though. Someone like Starc is who I'd say sprays the ball, because he probably doesn't even really know himself where the ball is gonna go (as demonstrated by his overs against Martin).

Cummins is 18 and has only played a handful of matches so the reality is that no-one can definitively say anything other than he has talent and an action that looks like an injury waiting to happen

Pattinson's long been seen as something special down here, he's just had too many injury problems. He hasn't really managed to bowl out a season yet, which is the biggest worry but also speaks of the volumes of improvement that he has left.

What are his injury problems specifically?

Yeah and, tbh, his bowling in the short spell tonight brought me right back to when I saw McGrath against England at the WACA in the mid-90's where he knocked over their top-order in the second dig. Similar sort of steep bounce but with a few extra wheels. Is the pick of the young quicks at this stage, myself.

Re: Cummins, the biggest problem I see with his action is his right arm coming through a bit past the vertical. Lee had the same thing at that age, though, and you can already see it happening a bit less so I'd say he'd work that particular bug out too. He really does slam on his front-foot, though. Will have to be managed well but he'll inevitably have leg injuries.

How good was that evening!!! 5/25 at stumps on day 4, McGrath just ran through them, Gatting and Gooch's last test innings gone in a flash. McGrath's first decent performance for Australia before he then went to the WI.
