There is a Hawke Cup challenge today, Canterbury Country are hosting Waikato Valley.

It’s the Valley’s first ever Hawke Cup game in their 20 year history, formed after an amalgamation between Thames Valley and Midlands, they’ve been really strong over the past 3-4 years. Gone from **** kickers along with Poverty Bay to matching it with the traditional powerhouses in Hamilton and the Bay of Plenty.

Generally most Northern Districts first class cricketers have come from either Northland, Counties, Hamilton or the Bay, but in the last few years the Valley have produced quite a number. Zak Gibson, Jake Gibson, Matt Fisher, Kristian Clarke, Chris Swanson and Tim Seifert.

Which is great for regional ND too. Did you hear the rumour about where ND want club cricketers to play if they were going to be selected? That's ridiculous if true.

DIsappointing there is no Zak Foulkes for Canterbury Country in that challenge match. He isn't playing for Canterbury last round either.

Ugh. Sneddon. Bound to get picked as part of the hegemony.

Fisher and Dudding with decent returns. Can't say I've seen anything of Dudding - unfortunately for Dudding looks to be mainly in one game against the batting of Wellington.

Fisher did well in his four dayer against India A too.

I've seen Dudding. Medium pacer who gets pretty good bounce. Our answer to Will Williams.

Did anyone mention the Tom Bruce lbw in the ND game and how the umpire must've either had an early dinner date or a bit of an earn on the result?

Milne set to play a Plunket game – his first in 4.5 years. My draft pick of him might pay off! Here're the squads:

Auckland: Ferguson seems to be rested; Delport in.

ND unchanged.

CD have cut Heaphy to include Young, which I guess was inevitable. Lennox out – ARs Clark and Small in. An interesting squad in that it seems they'll go with two more batting-oriented ARs, with only the 3 specialist bowlers.

Wellington look to have dropped Georgeson, and Younghusband from the squad. Smith and McPeake might be injured. Vishvaka replaces Georgeson, and 3 seamers have been brought in: Milne, Hartshorn, Leonard. Too many bowlers, especially seam; they don't seem particularly confident in Milne!

Canterbury: Foulkes, McClure, Bowes all still injured. M Boyle in, presumably to open. Their bowling now is < their batting with that sorta depth.

Otago have Rae in for Lockrose. Going with significantly less spin than their opponents Auckland.
