I did some Young vs Nicholls analysis a couple of years ago. Starting the season of Nicholl's NZ debut (2015-16) they were at a similar stage of their career, Nicholls better 50 over stats, Young better FC stats (Nicholls 32 FC games, 1852 runs @ 33, 2 x 100s, 12 x 50s. Young 29 games, 1788 runs @ 39, 2 x 100s, 11 x 50s. ) Both low 50 -> 100 FC conversion ratios. But Nicholls got 2 games against a weak Sri Lanka A, got 2 x downhill skiing 100s after 150 run Raval + Brownlie opening stands. Young only got 1 game 1 innings 66 against SL A. When injuries opened up a spot in the NZ ODI team Nicholls got the deserved nod, and made just enough ODI runs to keep in in the forefront of the selectors minds when Taylor was injured before the next test series.

In an alternative reality Young might have got two games vs SL A, and Nicholls one, Young could have scored the downhill skiing centuries, and their test careers could have been reversed.
I think Young also went to UK to play club cricket meanwhile Nicholls stayed back to train at the academy at Christchurch and impressed the powers be. Rest is history at they say.

That jeet raval dismissal is quite dodgy. Looks like he wasn't ready to face the ball, rather than move away he fended at it lay minute and nabbed in slips

Ton up! Rachin has peeled off some glorious shots since lunch. Still it’s been very easy batting today, I think he really needs to convert it into a big one to make his point to the selectors.

By the way I love watching Phillips bowl. So much enthusiasm and excitement.
Watched a bit this morning rachin was taking his time and muller was bowling really well. Tight lines and length. Looks like he had to work really hard the first hour. At lunch he was 50 and checked like half an hour or so later he was either on hundred or nearing. I quite like how he can change tempo like that. You usually get players either aggressive through out or guys that grind out scores. You barely see players that can score better than run a ball for a bit but also see off pressure periods with good defensive skills.

Rachin's length is really good. Must have done a lot of work on his bowling. It's so much better now and very accurate

Haha yeah, but then he didn't pull away when he saw the bowler a few steps from the crease, nicked it, and seemed to blame the umpire (or at least explain he wasn't ready). Too nice a bloke, Jeet, to get too wound up by that.

How about Foulkes' dismissal of Popli, Lance Cairns-esque.

That's right he'll probably apologize for the outburst if at all it was one. Probably will apologize to the bowler too ?

That ball to Popli the swung a mile, absolute cracker and Popli is in great touch but no shame in missing that.

Yeah I reckon Ravindra's a gun bowler and I don't want him to just be restricted to batting.

re the Raval dismissal: umpire Parlane actually wasn't all too ready either. Poor form from Foulkes imo.

Had a look at ball by ball of Ravindra's inning, the two shots that stand out are couple of taps vs Phillips and Foxcroft. I thought that would be no more than a single but they were fours. Either it is timing or the bat he is using must be out of the world. How can tap go for fours? He barely hit those.

McCay looks sharp... Shades of Tickner in the lad. Quite a young guy.

GP off the blocks this morning quite quickly, taken to Smith and Van Beek. It has to be said there's been some average bowling by Smith and Van Beek but GP has made them bowl average by putting away anything short.

Everytime I'm watching any format Van Beek is getting smashed all the time.

It looks like it was 2017/18 that Van Beek did so well. 40 PS wickets that season. I can remember thinking he had put on an extra yard of pace and had much improved control. And then he seemed to fall away completely again after that.
