Putting up two cameras isn't the only cost for a TV broadcast....

As soon as you have two cameras, you need a vision mixing desk, which requires an outside broadcast unit in a sporting sense. You have to get that OB unit to the ground from wherever in the country it may be. Most FC venues won't have fibre links in, so you need a satellite dish which needs to be transported to the ground, and also a booking made on the satellite (which I imagine is another cost for Sky, unless they own their own satellite) so the pictures can actually be fed back live to SKY MCR. Staffing costs etc and the easy fix suddenly becomes a bit more difficult.

Streaming a couple of average webcams on their website might be an option, but I don't imagine the quality would be wonderful.

I think there are a fair few cricketing tragics in NZ, but not enough to justify taking up 6 hours a day for 3-4 days a week during summer, producing a sub-standard product. Let's not forget that Sky, if they were to broadcast FC cricket, would have no interest in doing a half-assed job with two cameras and audio effects only.

Not Terrible
I can't imagine hooking up webcams would provide anything more than the opportunity to watch 15 men in white walk around a nice bit of grass for a few hours. The image quality would be woeful.

I think this is the biggest barrier to a cheap and dirty approach. sky stand to damage their brand.

And also, would those who think it should be a cheap and easy solution want full-page scoreboards and tickers (or short scoreboards in the corner of the screen)? Add that to the cost too. You need a graphics operator to run that.

I'd believe this if it wasn't for their league coverage.

Their NRL coverage is the equivalent of Brad Pitt being caught in a dress and high heels soliticiting man on man relations in the main street of New York City. Gives an awful image to the brand but probably doesn't kill it, and will still get work.

Steven Finn is joining Volts's boys for a wee spell after our tour of India concludes. From cricinfo.

Be interesting to see how he goes. NZ conditions, in theory, should be tailor made for him.

Am sure he will do well. Always good for us to have more quality international players around for first class matches too (rather than just for T20 as most are).

Btw CD followers - how many of the young faaaaaaast bowlers will be uninjured for the start of the season? ... seeing as they're supposed to be the future of our international attack and all that. Bracewell is obviously fit - what about Wheeler, Milne and Small?

All three are currently injured iirc.

Mason has also called it quits, so CD have a big bowling problem for the first couple of games.

:(

So an attrition rate of 50% per season then. In a couple of seasons we'll have nothing left but Doug Bracewell's left knee.

Not that Milne and Small couldn't come back from injuries, but bowl-fast + injuries when still early 20s is not a good sign.

Hate it when the media uses this term but I'm going to anyway..heard from a pretty good source that Radio Sport are going to do away with regular cricket commentaries this year on the basis of budget cuts. I'd imagine they'd still do the big 20/20, one-day games but get away from being at the grounds day in, day out. A real shame if true.

Rob Nicol

Great to follow Rob Nicol getting amongst the runs overnight in Zim. Recognition at last. Of the Kiwi youngsters attending MCC Young Cricketers at Lords over the past decade Nicol was reportedly the most highly rated Kiwi .Not the most challenging or demanding of bowling attacks in Harare but....a century on ODI debut is always a real positive.

Wonder what will happen to the bowling order - Volts have two openers already - and I have them both in my pool.

According to some theories this will mean less wickets for all three of them as they will have to share.

On the flipside for the Volts, Anthony Bullick has had to retire (thus giving up his contract) due to a stuffed back, aged 26. Pretty hard luck for a guy who did some good stuff last year.
