Some of the shots Solanki was hitting on the off side were absolutely brilliant. He was just cracking them. Well done, because the pressure was definitely on. Imagine if he was out first ball.

Pietersen played extremely well. Very composed at the start, and then got stuck into it. Unfortunately for him he was outsmarted by Dizzy with a brilliant slower ball.

England 50 runs short at least, and with Aus batting strength even 40-4 shouldn't trouble them.

Unlike others I'm not worried about the form of the top three; they were destined to fail against McGrath (who isn't?) and Lee looks mighty fine at the mo, tricky to get runs off those two without the severe chance of making a c*ck of oneself. Not having to score of McGrath in the Tests will help, and Lee won't be as big a threat with the red cherry IMO. England will be stronger with Bell and Thorpe arriving, Flintoff is finding form with the bat, and Hoggy will hopefully cause problems for the Aus lefties.

As for KP, what's the general concensus now? I'm still not sure myself, but I want Thorpe in this summer, so it would have to be Bell who goes. Glad I ain't a bo selector I tell you what.

FWIT I think they'll opt for Bell, gut feeling.

not suprising, solanki will now be wasted as a sub and will not be used, unless they just sub him on in the field which wouldnt be a terrible idea really...
Care to rethink that statement.

For a top test bowler, Kaspa is a really deplorable ODI bowler.

Strauss has 2 main scoring shots, cut and tuck off legs.

Where does Kaspa bowl? Short and wide or leg stump!
He ended up with figures just as good as the other 3 quicks. He had a sitter dropped off Strauss and then got him, he seems to have the wood on him at the moment. He is far from deplorable, probably not the best ODI bowler in the country, but he definitely deserves his spot on this tour.

Post of the day - you've made me optimistic about the tests, if only for another week and a bit. I think you're right about Bell, but that they'll pick KP in the XII to keep us guessing until Thursday morning.

Gooch reckons Pietersen & Thorpe should get picked ahead of Bell... No small wonder why Durham's batting was so utterly useless when he was the batting coach there.

I think England decided when they picked just Bell against Bangladesh when they could have picked both of them.

The super-sub concept has come under plenty of scrutiny, however, it has come up trumps already in this match. Without it, I doubt we'd be seeing many more than 25 overs in the Australian innings. It may leave England a little short, however at least we have some sought of game on our hands.

And Gough starts with a no-ball, and then a easy 4-ball, how surprising.
This is looking very similar to 2001, when England struggled to 170 and Gilchrist & Ponting saw Aus home in 30 overs.

One thing that did strike me about England's innings was how few extra Aus conceded, compared to what England have managed throughout the NW series. Call me a miserable old git, but I just don't see how players who bowl for a living can send down as many noballs & wides as our guys do.

Four wickets in his last 14 ODI's for Goughie. Good grief. They really should have given Tremlett a go in place of Gough this series, wtf are they playing at.

Can someone who's watching the game say whether Pietersen really was looking injured as he chased the ball in Harmy's last over?

I still can't believe England subbed Simon Jones instead of this plodding has-been
I was thinking exactly the same.

Maybe they didnt want to sub him in his last ever England match :D (wishful thinking)
