“Obviously South Africa are incredibly strong batting first, but we've got an incredibly good bowling line-up and there was no reason that we couldn't have restricted them to a total that could have been a lot easier to chase on there. Playing on at the end, I definitely thought it got better as well.”

Probably unfair to be picking apart statements like this one from Phillips (obviously you need to back yourselves in public), but I get the feeling NZ are overestimating the ability of their attack to restrict good batting sides in favourable batting conditions. There are proven performers in there alright but over the last two weeks they’ve been struggling with consistency or fitness or both. 300+ is very much par for the course, and asking a bit much of the batting to chase it down each time.

On the bit about ‘the wicket getting better towards the end’, well let’s leave it at that. (Though South Africa bowled fantastically well, must be said)

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
Southee should not be playing any ODI's. Ferg is not the future anymore and struggling in the present (and past 2 years). Milne for now could be an ok band-aid solution alongside sodhi but time for NZC to immediately bring in fisher, o'rourke, sears, addy ashok after this tourney. Expecting jamieson to be the man at the 2027 wc. Bit of a long shot post here but the injuries, form always being down for some of our guys is making me nervous.
Henry. Shipley.

While we’re on Latham happened to notice he’s now played 17 World Cup games and averages a whopping 23 striking at 80 (I honestly thought the strike rate would be low 70’s at best). Throw in his average keeping and he’s a waste of space playing at 5 where scores of 300 plus are a must

Bat first to assert dominance over the opposition. Confident and composed teams will run up a huge score & then let scoreboard pressure work as an additional factor to tight bowling and fielding. Hopefully the opposition will crumble. SA have been on the receiving end of just such a scenario in this tourney, and NZ were last night.
NZ have a batting heavy line-up and are looking to use it to attempt to chase down totals. On the other side of the ledger, using just 4 specialist bowlers means an over-reliance on part timers….particularly if one of the specialists gets injured or has an off day. The balance of the NZ side is not right.

The question was asked prior to the tournament as to why Latham was a ‘must play’. He’ll stand up against a minnow but don’t expect anything against any of the top sides. Too many very soft dismissals during the middle overs when he should be able to work the ball around and build an innings.

Looks like this went well.

The attack is mostly injured and has been on the decline for a while anyway. Boult shows up when he feels like it rather than stays in the best environment available to him, Ferguson has been bad for 2 years, and Southee and Neeshsm are known quantities with the white ball.

On roads they're a risk of getting smashed. This is why you play odis between cups.

Also SA have shown up to this tournament with the wrath of God. They'd be very deserving finalists. SA are just better.

Didn't see us bat but collapses are always a chance chasing big scores

Yeah, on flat ones he's cannon fodder. When van der Dussen pulled him third ball like he was facing the U10s, I feared what was ahead. Southee is still an intelligent bowler, but he's just not got that zip with the white ball anymore. He can probably do a job on certain pitches, but not quick flat ones.

I'd also have Phillips at 5, Latham is busted at present and you want your best guys batting as many balls and overs as you can. I know Phillips finishes well but he's too valuable to say we want you one lower.
Tim Southee since the conclusion of the 2015 World Cup, yep 2015.

85 wickets @ 38 going at 5.8’s, taking just over one wicket per match 😂

The guy literally breaks his thumb before the World Cup and Stead decides to carry him for the first few weeks as if he has prime Shane Bond on his hands. It’s not Southee’s fault he’s picked but he’s been a joke of a ODI bowler for close to a decade. Like you said he just has no zip, absolute fodder.

NZ need to replace 2-3 injured players. Cannot bloody carry so many passengers.

Bring in Milne, Jamieson, Bracewell depending on who is being sent home.

And please drop Young from playing XI.

You just don't sleep over there in Auckland.

Which Bracewell?

Just playing devils advocate here cos not sure the toss decision is as bad as your all making out......without the benefit of hindsight of course.

NZ normally chase well yeah and you've got a pretty decent attack? One of the top 3 sides in the tourney to date........should that side be approaching a game worried about what the opposition might do to them or should they be focused on what they're going to do to the opposition?

Obviously it didn't work out but im feeling it was a confident call and possibly not reasonable to be attracting as much criticism as it is?

And this is with a 15 man squad where one spot was already occupied by an injured player (Williamson).

You could see the logic at the time but hindsight makes everyone see 20/20 eh?

Think everyone's mad because South Africa seem way more comfortable to bat first and get runs on the board and we just kind of gave them the chance to do that.
