***Official***Match #32 - New Zealand vs South Africa - November 1st - Pune (D/N)

Well....that's not good. Nor is it panic stations - that's our first poor loss. No reason we still can't win at least one knockout game if we get things right. Certainly will need Henry to do that, and I'd like to see Phillips bat 5 to maximise his time at the crease.

Still believe we can beat pak and sl, but now its pressure and quite tricky. We have a couple of teams now hunting for the 4th spot we want.

If SA bat first in the knockout matches, the World Cup is theirs!
It's likely to be Aus in the semis and a side they've put big runs on recently. However, they did elect to bat first against them in the 07 semi-finals and McGrath bundled them out for nothing.

Disappointing loss. Every team has a collapse in them, and we had one today. That's the way it goes. Some poor shot selections, as is the way when a team folds in the manner NZ did today.

Not sure why we bowled first. Looked a bad decision at the time, and looked worse when we came up 200 runs short. Also, the decision to consider NRR only after we'd lost 9 wickets was strange. Phillips wasn't concerned about giving the strike to Boult and Southee - who then swung for the rafters - yet he turned down singles when Henry was batting. Odd.

Injuries to Neesham and Henry are a worry. Though we could end up benefitting from them if we replace them effectively should they be ruled out of there tournament. WHICH WE WON'T.

When is Conway's form a concern. 6 failures and a hundred against a failing England. Southee did a great Ferguson impersonating 2/75. Not the man for the job, Sodhi, Milne or bust. Maybe slow on the uptake here but coming to the sad conclusion Young isn't quite there and never will be.

Qualify for the semis and re-assess.

What is the relevance to this tournament though?

Not sure where he's at with his hamstring injury, and I know Jamieson was the back-up bowling cover, but Milne is a guy who could/should come into this XI and do a job if Henry/Ferguson are no good

I presume the turning down of singles was because of Henry's hamstring. And what injury does Neesham have?

I share your sadness on Will Young, who is losing his grip on his position in the SteveNZ ODI fanboy team. I hate unconverted starts, I used to leave supposedly great mates out of post-match shouts for those reasons.

Southee should not be playing any ODI's. Ferg is not the future anymore and struggling in the present (and past 2 years). Milne for now could be an ok band-aid solution alongside sodhi but time for NZC to immediately bring in fisher, o'rourke, sears, addy ashok after this tourney. Expecting jamieson to be the man at the 2027 wc. Bit of a long shot post here but the injuries, form always being down for some of our guys is making me nervous.

Conway is very much proving to be hit and miss in ODI's. He does ton up against big teams though, so expecting him to come good soon.

If SA win against IND then they face NZ/PAK in semi-final

Will Young looks the part every time. Until he doesn't!

Good point re Henry's injury and not taking singles. But we obviously were looking at NRR for him to bat with an injury in the first place. So why not start that with Boult or Southee at the crease. Muddled thinking for me.

Neesham hurt his thumb dropping a caught and bowled. Ending up batting after Southee.

Yeah, on flat ones he's cannon fodder. When van der Dussen pulled him third ball like he was facing the U10s, I feared what was ahead. Southee is still an intelligent bowler, but he's just not got that zip with the white ball anymore. He can probably do a job on certain pitches, but not quick flat ones.

I'd also have Phillips at 5, Latham is busted at present and you want your best guys batting as many balls and overs as you can. I know Phillips finishes well but he's too valuable to say we want you one lower.

Strange to perhaps talk about positives but what a first long form tournament phillips is having. 2 fifties (the one against afg now proving to be very crucial honestly) and a load of important wickets. Yes he could have done better in a few matches but I think he will only get better at this tournament.

Hats off to South Africa this was an immaculate all-round dominating display.
Couldn't believe it when I saw we won the toss. WTF are we doing inserting them and letting them play to their strength???

SA nz is one of those games that can only be a paddlin' in either direction - If we get new ball wickets, SA's middle/lower order is vulnerable. If SA keep wickets in hand, our death bowling is truly clueless atm.

On top of that in the post-match presentation Latham told that his decision was correct and SA scored 20 runs more than he had expected.
