My analysis for this match. I would like to have a good discussion on this and would be grateful for feedback.
Chasing 300 with the new ball under seam and swing isn't easy. The problem with our batsmen is that they have shoddy footwork and aren't willing to see off the new ball. And you can bet that the host nations won't prepare pitches that have grass on them for their own matches. They are going to go with dead pitches that turn a lot.
We are not the only team that is suspect to the new ball, all the other teams are also prone to having a collapse once or twice (South Africa) because one of the key jobs of the opener is to see of the new ball swing, and once the openers fall cheaply then all teams have the potential to collapse (you might have noticed that the run rate slows down once openers fall for any team, because the rest of the players aren't as good with the swinging ball).
The only difference is that other teams have good openers who can see off the new ball and launch a good platform for the rest of the team. India have Tendulkar, RSA have Amla, England have Strauss, Australia have Watson, and so on. Pakistan are relying on Hafeez who doesn't even deserve to be called an opener.
In addition to this, I think Pakistan should have consolidated their innings until the dew factor came into affect. With the ball skidding on to the bat nicely without swing or turn, the lower order could have done damage (we saw a glimpse of this with Razzaq and Gul).
As for their bowling, I think Afridi's biggest mistake was to open with a spinner on a grassy track where the ball was swinging (Kandy lies quite high above sea level and so team management should have realised that the ball will move around a lot). This completely wasted Razzaq's bowling who is really bad later on in the innings.
