Those of us that don't rate him tend to be a bit cautious about saying so, because every now and then he does something amazing and makes us look immensely stupid. Those good performances are few and far between, though.
Once every 10 or so years by the looks of his ODI career.

James Franklin batting at five ahead of Scott Stryis is easily the worst selection blunder of this world cup, I'd love to hear anyone actually try and justify it. He flukes a 90 odd not out against a piss ass bowling attack and all of a sudden he's the important rock in the middle of this New Zealand batting order, gah.

Yeah, fell over my words a bit there. Meant that they look like no-one can beat them when they get it right. They've won about 5 ODIs out of their last 20, but all those were hammerings.
I think it was Hurricane who said that NZ always take their games seriously, more so than most other teams because of the lack of talent pool, and so when they win, they win big.

My analysis for this match. I would like to have a good discussion on this and would be grateful for feedback.

Chasing 300 with the new ball under seam and swing isn't easy. The problem with our batsmen is that they have shoddy footwork and aren't willing to see off the new ball. And you can bet that the host nations won't prepare pitches that have grass on them for their own matches. They are going to go with dead pitches that turn a lot.

We are not the only team that is suspect to the new ball, all the other teams are also prone to having a collapse once or twice (South Africa) because one of the key jobs of the opener is to see of the new ball swing, and once the openers fall cheaply then all teams have the potential to collapse (you might have noticed that the run rate slows down once openers fall for any team, because the rest of the players aren't as good with the swinging ball).

The only difference is that other teams have good openers who can see off the new ball and launch a good platform for the rest of the team. India have Tendulkar, RSA have Amla, England have Strauss, Australia have Watson, and so on. Pakistan are relying on Hafeez who doesn't even deserve to be called an opener.

In addition to this, I think Pakistan should have consolidated their innings until the dew factor came into affect. With the ball skidding on to the bat nicely without swing or turn, the lower order could have done damage (we saw a glimpse of this with Razzaq and Gul).

As for their bowling, I think Afridi's biggest mistake was to open with a spinner on a grassy track where the ball was swinging (Kandy lies quite high above sea level and so team management should have realised that the ball will move around a lot). This completely wasted Razzaq's bowling who is really bad later on in the innings.

Umm, Akhtar is our opening bowler and Razzaq is considered a key part of the team balance. We’re focusing on the WC right now. Who cares if this will be repeated in the future? These two are important keys to our success in the present WC.
Really?

Razzaq's figures opening the bowling were pretty good actually, don't know why they didn't give him the new ball.

Always rated Ross Taylor and today he put on a masterclass, perfect one day innings played himself in then the last 5 overs he blitzed the Pakistani attack.

Woeful performance from Pakistan though.

Taylor, Guppy and Ryder are potentially some of the greatest ever NZ ODI cricketers. All have some of the highest averages of Kiwi cricketers as well.

Mills is an awesome new ball bowler, but he needs to be banned from bowling after the 30th over. His figures always take a hit at the end of the innings.

Up till the 20th over
Mills: 6-1-16-2

From over 30 on:
Mills: 2-0-27-0

Southee is finally getting figures that really represent his potential.
He's been New Zealand's most impressive player at this world cup so far for mine. He's swung the new ball consistently while bowling at a good pace up front and then come back with the old ball and has got that to reverse around as well.

With Southee, NZ have replaced Bond. He looks like a really good bowler.

Pretty realistic chance of India meeting Pakistan in the quarters after this result. Interesting.

Think thats somewhat of a stretch to call Guptill one of the greatest NZ ODI cricketers - hes made only three scores in excess of 70 in 48 ODIs. Made far too many mid-range scores as a specialist batsman to be considered one of our greatest ever IMO.

Despite that, he's still done something few nz openers before him has managed-get us off to decent starts consistently. Well on his way to being one of our greatest, assuming he improves to what he's capable of.

Aye.

Bowl his first 6 overs from 1-12, then bring him back for 2 between overs 20-29, then 34-37 after the ball change.

New Zealand have not actually bowled death overs in a live match situation in this world cup yet. Have they actually decided who will bowl with Southee?
