It would be in Australia's and Martyn's and Hayden's best interests, if their ODI careers were terminated after this tour. I don't think Martyn has added much value to the ODI team of late, and Hayden was a dog's breakfast in his last year of ODIs. In my view, their Test form could only be enhanced (and Hayden's already has) by being cut adrift from ODIs.FaaipDeOiad said:Martyn's ODI career is just about over I think, and rightly so. I think he should stay in the test side, but there's simply better options in ODIs.
482 @ 32.13 from 16 matches. Not great, but nothing dire.howardj said:It would be in Australia's and Martyn's and Hayden's best interests, if their ODI careers were terminated after this tour. I mean his batting as a whole (Test and ODI's).andyc said:482 @ 32.13 from 16 matches. Not great, but nothing dire.
Hayden obviously wants to play in the World Cup, and I've got no problem with him doing so as long as he proves himself worthy of the spot ahead of Katich, for the simple reason that he could still be one of the better opening options we've got in ODIs. Martyn's simply not the best choice for number 4 in ODIs any more though, and hasn't done anything in the shorter form since the Ashes tour.howardj said:It would be in Australia's and Martyn's and Hayden's best interests, if their ODI careers were terminated after this tour. Clarke's better off in the middle order, IMO. He, Symonds and Hussey are what make the Aussie batting line up what it is, as it means early wickets can be lost, but they can still post a competitive, 280+ total.howardj said:I'd like to see Clarke and Haddin both partner Gilcrhist as openers at some stage this summer.
Agreed. Clarke is probably quite capable of opening in ODIs, but he's such a good player down the order that I wouldn't want him to spend all his time up there. Clarke and Hussey at 6 and 7 is not only an incredible safety net, but they are as good as any players in the world at bringing up the run rate in the late overs.andyc said:Clarke's better off in the middle order, IMO. He does that without playing a shot with Katich's current style opening. Personally it wouldn't surprise me to see Hayden opening in the WC next year. He also is a vastly superior fielder to Katich.FaaipDeOiad said:Hayden obviously wants to play in the World Cup, and I've got no problem with him doing so as long as he proves himself worthy of the spot ahead of Katich,

I think he'd be fine to be honest, as long as he didn't get frustrated and try to hit out. His technique against the quicks is very, very good IMO.. he just loses concentration occassionally. How do you think Watson would fare against top-class pace attacks such as Pakistan's (Akhtar-Asif-Rana) if he has to see off the new ball?
