Eh? What happened?

@ burr

Its raining. 16/0 after 5.
Thankyou. Much appreciated : ) Hope it's not a wash-out, Aus needs these games before the Ashes. We haven't played in like an age.

16/0 after 5 overs. The highlights so far ...

* McGrath sticking to an outside off line in the first over to Dravid, a maiden
* Johnson generating massive swing with accuracy in his first over
* McGrath bowling two or three jaffas to the Indian master batsmen
* Tendulkar stepping out and slamming McG through mid-on before rain intervened

Mitchell Johnson looks impressive - how close is he to a test berth ?
After McGrath, Lee, Clark and Gillespie and before Kasprowicz and Tait I'd say.
In other words, very close.

I can't be bothered looking this up b/c I'm lazy and I haven't followed cricket in ages but is VVS still in the Indian team. He is the most devine on-side player. My absolute fav, after Marto of course.

Laxman is a test team borderline regular (just ahead of Yuvraj and Kaif in the middle-order) but no longer in the one-day team. He was initially left out due to his slow strike rate but now mainly due to his fielding. While he may deserve a call-up at some point, it's very unlikely with the emergence of Suresh Raina.

Thanks for that. That's a shame. Where's the elegance in cricket these days? I need some young up and comer with grace, NOT power, to latch onto.

Trust me, Raina's got grace.

Johnson isn't that close to a test berth, though he shows much promise, the guy's played like 4 ODI's not against Bangladesh and has gone at the best part of 10 an over in most of them. I rate him, but he's not that close.

McGrath > Lee > Clark > Johnson

in terms of Test Berth for mine. Doesn`t mean that`s the way I want it. So he`s close. If Lee gets injured he`s got a brilliant shot. Pretty funny to read some comments by Indian fans. If you`ve got some pace, you should be playing in the Ashes. :D

Oohh really?! That's exciting. I have no idea how I'll ever be able to watch him bat, until the next time India tour Aus because I don't have cable and Aus is pathetically parochial. But I'll keep a look out on the web.

Referring to me? I was impressed by his swing and the fact that he's a left-armer (which Australia lack in the test format) more than just his pace.

I think you can forget Kasprowicz as far as test cricket is concerned.

McGrath, Warne and Lee are obviously the ashes certainties. The last spot is up for grabs.

Clark MOTS in South Africa has the front running from Gillespie with MacGill a chance with Watson at 6.

Johnson took match figures of 10/96 after Queensland racked up 6 for 900 in the shield final at the Gabba. I don't think the selectors would risk picking an inexperienced bowler but he'd be in line with Bracken if they did decide a swing bowler was required for the first test in Brisbane.

S*** Marto failed. But at least Clarky got runs, it's looking good for the Ashes! He has to be in.
I think the Symonds disaster has shown us that selecting test players based on OD performance isn't a good idea.

Clarke has shown promise in test cricket before though. Symonds was a random experiment that failed.

Well it wasn't just his pace that attracted my attention.......He''s struck me as being more impressive than Tait in the little tat I've seen of both of them.

I'm not basing it on OD performance. I'm basing it on the fact he's the one young gun Aus has got that has any talent and has proven himself at test-level. Of course, putting himself forward on the OD scene won't do his chances of a recall any harm.
