A young Bangladesh cricket fan was killed in scuffle in a village following a quarrel over the result of Sunday's sixth and final one day match between India and Pakistan.
The incident took place in the country's eastern Comilla district on Monday, according to hospital sources.
Delayed reports reaching here said that 22-year-old Sohel of Daspara village of Daudkandi upazila of the district had an altercation over the Sunday's match, which the India team lost in a big margin, with his friends.
At one stage during the altercation, Sohel's friends hit him with sharp weapon and left him in a seriously injured state.
Sohel was rushed to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries on Monday.
Police have filed a case in connection with the incident, but so far, have failed to nab any of the accused.
Cricket fans in Bangladesh, which gained Test-playing status recently, are sharply divided whenever India-Pakistan match takes place. And Sunday's match proved to be no different in terms of emotional involvement.
With India having initially taken a 2-0 lead in the six-match series through its thumping wins in Kochi and Vishakhapatnam, thanks to brilliant centuries by Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid and Mahendra Singh Dhoni, there was a feeling that Pakistan would lose its way and return home as losers.
But fate and determination willed otherwise. A young and largely inexperienced Pakistan team led by its captain Inzamam-ul-Haq struck back with vengeance at Jamshedpur, Ahnmedabad and Kanpur, and finally at Delhi to clinch the series 4-2. The victory in Delhi by 159 runs proved to all the more sweeter, as Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf was in the Indian capital on an
official three-day visit, which included watching the match for sometime with Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.
While questions are now being asked in the Indian cricket camp about what possible changes will take place in the team in the coming months, the Pakistan team returned to Lahore yeterday to a tumultous welcome. They were garlanded and feted by people from all walks of life, including the top brass of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), which is headquartered there.
The icing on the cake was that the Pakistani players are likely to receive a boost in their incomes for their very good performance in India. (ANI)
