Thanks for the info 309. Before this decision, I was saying to myself that Bucknor has been good so far except for the no ball decision against Sami or Razzaq when he indicated that the foot was 3-4 inches out, and in reality it was the other way round.
I would like to think of it as a coincidence, but most of Bucknor's shoddy decisions have come against India. Btw, do you know what the Afridi-Dravid ruckus was all about?
I am too tired to rewind and watch, but I think it was abt the Appeal...and Inzi was telling afridi to calm down or something

Abt Bucknor, I mentioned the same..so good till now and well.........wasted enuff typos for the man, lets get on with the game (maybe rudi told bucknor he missed sachins nick in 1st test off Kaneria so plz give him out whenever u get the chance  )

Worse, before Razzaq (?) bowled one ball to Ganguly, I heard the bat hit the ball, only to actually see it later, hit for a straight drive.

The ball was atleast 2-3 inches away when it went past the bat, there was no sound, no appeals except from the bowler. I think if Razzaq would not have persisted, he would have turned it down and I believe he had judged Tendulkar not out in the beginning. Neither anyone from the slip cordon, nor the wicket-keeper cared even for a half hearted appeal
Whilst it was clearly the wrong decision, the images a few posts above you show that the distance was no more than 2cm, absolute maximum, and that first slip did manage a half hearted appeal.

I wish I could show u the Video, Razzaq almost turned back, thinking it was 2 much to ask..and He just started laughing and ran to Akmal, sorta tellinghim to appeal
he was angry at every one for not appealing and he was laughing at the same time

Usually, I don't complain about umpiring errors but the unfolding of today's events really irks me because what Tendulkar complained about all along (bad light), turned out to be an important factor in Bucknor's erroneous decision (bad light = bad visibility = bad decision).

Another concern I have is, where was the light meter in all of this? Why are the players arguing with the umpires about something that they have the technology (commonly used one too) for?

I don't know what is a more appropriate way to describe what happened out there today - tragic or comical...

Give it up dude. Normally I dont whine about a poor umpiring decision, I dont understand how came up with the 2cm or may be you were watching some other match.

"Umpire Steve Bucknor gave the batsman out caught behind, although Pakistan barely appealed and replays showed the ball missed the bat by an inch."

Right, here y'are. This is taken from Rajeev's video clip, and blown up by 450% (warning, big image)

The gap between ball and bat is 21 pixels. I've also plotted the 21 pixels on the shoulder of the bat - it comes about 75% from the bottom of the rubber handle to the edge of the blade. Whilst I don't know how wide Sachin's bat is, I do know that the handle to blade distance on my V500 is 14mm. 14mm × 0.75 = 10.5mm. Even given measurement error, I stand by my 2cm maximum,
