how can you blame the captain?
I know what you mean... but some mis-guided people still do. He (Arjun) was just explaining that some perhaps hot-headed people will straight-away blame the captain. :)

Seeing the swing that Naved-ul-hasan was getting, the Indian selectors may have to consider Jai Prakash Yadav for the next ODI, or at least the next series against Sri Lanka- they can then play a batsman less. But what went wrong with the Indian new-ball attack? Balaji, at his pace, is a target for batsmen like Afridi, but still, Naved got those top-order wickets, but they didn't.

It was great stuff. Its no fun losing the game and even worse when your bowlers are treated like fodder but it was truly amazing stuff.

I too have always felt Afridi is gifted but plays like a "jat" (or a Pathan as you might say) but today he was a killer.

I have a feeling he will not be comfortable against really quick short stuff on his body but India hasnt had bowlers who can do that since I have been watching and thats from a millenium back  . What do you think ?

How is he against short rising very fast stuff?

One look at the no-ball and wide counter and you'll notice that Balaji bowled just one wide in 6 overs, while Zaheer bowled just two in 7, and there were zero no-balls- not too bad, given they were taken apart by Afridi.

Well i think it was about 5 years ago now, when Brett Lee first came onto the scene.. There was a one day series around that time and afridi looked very shaky against the short quick stuff from Lee. But there is alot of batsman in the world that can be made to look shaky against that stuff from Lee delivered in the high 150's. However afridi managed to not get out to him.

But the last VB series, i noticed afridi was launching Lee around the park... Don't know if any short stuff was tried, (didn't see it myself ) but he did manage to whack lee.

When Pathan drops it short, the ball is usually somewhere in the stands... i know that much :p

The Indian team should do a rethink on that fifth bowler combination and stick to the same bowler for all five overs- look at the performance of that bits-and-pieces combination in the last 3 ODI's-
  • MATCH 3: 11.4-0-84-2
  • MATCH 4: 12-0-73-1
  • MATCH 5: 9.1-0-64-2
If you take out those overs bowled by Sehwag, they look a lot worse. The Indian ODI side will be in trouble for a very long time if they continue with this plan.

If it comes up straight, he does look suspect- even Nehra got him out once that way, and he's not express.
nah i dnt think that was suspect. He missed his pull shot, and it struck him in the helmet.. he didn't even flinch. Wasn't really the short sharp stuff that SJS was talking about i dnt think.

I think it was more the angle from the left hander that did it more than anything

Could very well be a silly suggestion but could India try opening with one of their spin bowlers, maybe even Sachin to try and restrict Afridi in the sixth and final ODI? All the Indian seamers just seam so badly out of form at the moment.

The Indian seamers depend too much on seam and swing movement, which makes it a lot harder for them on flat pitches, when it's very hot. When they're not getting the ball to move, at their pace, they're all targets. QUESTION- Why was Nehra dropped? They can try picking some tall, muscular pace bowler who's known to bowl at serious pace and has been identified by the press (Abid Nabi, Vikram Singh and Munaf Patel are supposed to be a lot faster than the average Indian medium-pacer) for the last ODI or even the next series, just to try something different. Agree about openign with a spinner, but that should just be for an over or two, and should be a non-regular spinner. They can even consider promoting Zaheer Khan to number 3!

Awesome. All those who didnt watch it live missed something.

Afridi..well...he just didnt stop. Truly one of his best days, everything came from the middle......Wicked

The selectors should try out Abid Nabi or Vikram Singh for a few ODI's- they seriously need to look beyond the five options they stick to, and these two can bowl a lot faster.
