It has been mentioned that Kumble had a terrible 2004 in ODI's. This is true. But just for the record , it may be interesting to see how the other spinner in the Indian team fared in 2005.

PLAYER...........WKTS.......AVG.......STK RATE........ECO RATE
Harbhajan..............2............69.5............81......................5.2
Kumble.................HAS NOT PLAYED A SINGLE GAME SO FAR

2004

PLAYER...........WKTS.......AVG.......STK RATE........ECO RATE
Harbhajan..............13............32.0............50.0..........................3.9
Kumble...................8............68.9............85.............................4.9

Not much of a difference. Of course Harbhajan played fewer matches.

2003
PLAYER............WKTS.......AVG.......STK RATE........ECO RATE
Harbhajan..............21..............27.7............42.3..........................3.9
Kumble..................13.............25.8.............35.9.........................4.3

Interesting.

PS : Please note correction from earlier posted figures

dont need to be told fielding is important. As is the practice on this forum some people intentionally/or otherwise miss the woods for the trees.

The point I am making, since it needs to be emphasised, is that some players, batsmen or bowlers, can be so useful to their teams in their specialised discipline that even if they are just average fielders, they are played. I mentioned MacGrath in that context.
Look, McGrath plays for a great team, not one struggling to win an ODI series.

Moreover, not everyone in that team is as good as Ponting or Symonds. Yet, all of them have their basics set right and can do their job. Stop the singles. Stop the fours. Hit the stumps. Take the catches. Kumble has been found wanting there very often, particularly of late.
...Of the top six players to play for India in ODI's (by number of matches), three are ordinary fielders and of these three Kumble is perhaps the better fielder....
And what great thing has the Indian ODI side ever done with them in the team? They have only won a tournament occasionally, and they have been those half-penny tournaments which better sides don't take seriously.

In comparison, teams like Sri Lanka and New Zealand, with fewer 'prolific' players, have outperformed the Indian side time and again in ODI's. That's purely because of better fielding and running skills, which weaken the Indian team a lot. They also play to plans that are effective.

As for the big difference in the main functional area, if the better of the two is not going to win you matches consistently, it's of little use. Just runs and wickets don't win matches all the time. It can be an extraordinary catch. It can be a breathtaking save. It can be an explosive direct-hit. It can be the extra singles, twos and threes. Small things like these can change a match, when they are all added up.

Crowds in Kochi and mohalli were good. This one was a bit quiet but so what!! They just saw Pakistan chase a difficult target and could'nt believe it ;)

I cannot believe Sourav has been banned for 6 ODi's no matter how you look at it that is harsh. I hope BCCI appeal strenously and PCB join them in teh appeal to suspend his punsihment till Pak have played the last 2 ODI's. ;)

Utter Rubbish !!
Rubbish?!?! How is that rubbish? Every professional game I have ever been to, the home crowd stays so quiet when their team's losing that you can hear a fart from a mile away. So the silence in the Indian crowd was understandable, but the Pakistanis' cheers for the Indian side last year were a bit out of the ordinary.

Exactly, instead of appreciating Inzamam's effort, they called him "aloo, aloo". Very disappointing crowd!
Thats not good. But why you keep on whining day in and day out. If the crowd is like that what can we do. nothing. There are continuously 3 posts about this which keeps on whining.

In Hindsight, the "aloo" teasing gave Inzamam more strength which in-turn costed India the game.

India, although 1 big country has many religions, people with different characteristics, style which is what we see in the crowd

Pakistani crowd was very consistent, probably due to the fact they are 1 Islamic Nation, similar ideolgy, thinking in all parts.

They are very sporting, cheerful as opposed to crowd in some places in India which were better than the others (I wouldn't imagine Chennai crowd doing that)

I am sure Bombay crowd would have also pulled up the "aloo" word but more in humourous tease than the insult. I have seen them tease own players too

But if you compare the 2 crowds, people will obviosuly find the sporting attitude missing in India thus the comments every now and then

Just my opinion

Did you know the no. of Indians crossed over to watch every match in Pakistan during that series? Is it possible that majority of the cheers (for the Indian team) were from the Indian crowd ?

India has cheered even when the tensions were high between the two countries (chennai test), So just relax and be happy with what you have got.

..This is what I was trying to explain in my previous post, every place, city, locale has different characteristics, South Indians are Generally very mild, donw to earth, simpleton as such.

U wont find lotta agression in them. Mark Nicholas even mentioned this once on this commentary while appreciating Dravid's batting

Did u hear Delhi crowd 1999, I can still remember someone said "Chukde Phatte" from the Crowd and fired up Harbhajan Clean - Bowled Afridi, now that worked as an Adavantage :D

Are you sure that's all of 2004 there for Harbhajan?

He had that one spell of 2-14 or something in 10 overs against England, so makes his other games very bad indeed!
