Rahul: One great knock when the series was dead seems to have convinced some people that he's done well but for almost the entire series he looked a sitting duck against the incoming delivery.
Dhawan: A couple of 20s and 30s is the ceiling of what anyone reasonably expected so no one can be particularly disappointed. But it's Shaw time.
Vijay : Shame to see one of the best batsmen from the 2014-15 overseas leg play like he had no clue which end of the bat to hold. Still wouldn't bin him for good though since the alternatives are so shite.
Pujara : Played one superb knock but little else. Thought he looked way better and more confident after that downhill skiing 70 in the 3rd test. Encouraging to see, but his technique is just too flawed to get runs overseas. Hopefully he gets a few on those flat shitheaps in Australia.
Kohli : Batted as well as anyone could have hoped. Rode his luck a bit with drops and edges, and gave it away with a couple of bad dismissals but that's just being nitpicky. He's had two absolutely superb overseas tours in a row in difficult batting conditions where he's looked a level above any other batsman on either team but has had precious little support from his teammates.Best active batsman in the world by a mile.
Rahane : For the supposed overseas specialist this was a complete failure. To his credit, his two scores were both very very good knocks in the context but still nowhere near good enough. I'm not even convinced Rohit would have done much worse. Probably needs some time back in the domestics but he's rubbish in Indian conditions so I don't even think that'll help.
Vihari: One of the jammiest fifties I've seen in a while even though he looked pretty good as the innings progressed. Don't think he's good enough for tests tbh but it would be harsh to judge him on one test.
Hardik: said this about him before the series
What do Indian fans think Hardik's going to do? I'll be glad if he scores a couple of quick 50s and picks up 10 wickets across the series.
Close enough. Tried with the bat, produced one great spell. Should be in the frame for selection in overseas tests going forward, he just shouldn't be a lock.
Pant: Looks a rubbish keeper even though most of the byes weren't his fault, but clearly has loads of talent with the bat. Not sure if he provides better overall value than Saha but definitely looks a more promising batsman.
Ishant : Was excellent throughout the series except lord's. And the thing is, it was completely unsurprising how good he was.
Shami: Bowled better than an average of 38 would indicate but he did spray it around at times and was India's least impressive pacer.
Bumrah: Genuine revelation. Thought he was a tad lucky to get away with his figures in SA but he was awesome here. Could be a real find and Shastri and Kohli deserve a lot of credit for backing him in the longer format.
Ashwin : One very good test but this isn't the first time he's let the team down by bowling badly in favorable spin bowling conditions. But no, Jadeja is not a better bowler.
Jadeja: Not the meme cricketer he's made out to be at times but also not as good as Ashwin, at least with the ball. India need to rotate Hardik/Ashwin/Jadeja better and shouldn't hesitate playing Ashwin and Jadeja both if necessary. This obviously stems from their lack of confidence in the frontline bowlers to do well and also not get injured which is understandable, but they should back them more imo.
Overall a pretty garbage series. I see a lot of the media celebrating how competitive the series was and how the 4-1 scoreline doesn't reflect that competitiveness, and there's a little bit of truth to that. However, simply competing in English conditions isn't much of an achievement, they're not as dominant as Australia at home where they smash everyone bar the odd series. West indies won a test last year and competed well for almost the entirety of the deciding test too. Australia, 60 all out memes aside managed two wins. Pakistan have drawn their last two series there. SL won a series. NZ drew the last time they toured (probably should've won) . India's "achievement" of being competitive is not worthy of any praise whatsoever.
