Dhoni's is a bit of a tightrope job, sometimes he gets criticised for no good reason. It's almost as if some fans don't understand that sometimes building a partnership and preventing the tail from being exposed is crucial when batting 2nd in ODIs.
He's lost the team dozens and dozens of games in the last few years. There has been no unfair criticism.

If anything, a big chunk of the Indian fanbase still blindly worships him and is still so far up his backside that they haven't admitted how terrible he's been and will push this innings as evidence he hasn't been woeful for over three years now.

This is true, but he's been falling off the rope far too often and there's only so many times you can see a man land splat on his face before you think, maybe he should stop doing this.

Also it doesn't help that sometimes there's the option of a nice easy walk across a bridge to get to the other side but Dhoni decides to picks the tightrope while riding a unicycle instead.

That's actually the best description of MSD's batting I've ever heard.

with the difference being an immense flattening of pitches and much looser fielding restrictions.

overall kohli's still ahead though.
Well yeah I only said he's going to overtake him statistically. Not saying 45 in Sachin's era equals 45 now. But longevity is really the only thing separating the two in the ODI arena.

I'm just surprised because I thought his ODI numbers were basically untouchable when he retired compared to his Test numbers, but now it looks like it's the other way around. 51 Test hundreds bloody hell.

Kohli needs to dominate atleast one world cup. Tendulkar was arguably the best batsman on show in 3 different editions.

yeah i agree. ultimately world cups are what people remember, not the fourth odi of the seventeenth series against sri lanka this year alone

No one would complain if he can continue to pull it off more than half the time.

In any case, I'd be quite glad if he plays and India get knocked out at the preliminary stage of the World Cup.
Hopefully, the fans first, and subsequently the BCCI, will lose interest in this most abominable caricature of cricket..

I'd say Virat & Sachin are roughly par at the moment (which says an enormous amount about Virat's quality!). I think if Virat did happen to dominate a World Cup then that would cement his supremacy.

Are you talking about the World Cup, or ODIs in general?

Good game that. Enjoyable to watch. Bit annoyed at Finch’s field settings but still good to see an odi so close. Dump Siddle. He brings nothing. Get Starc in for the decider.
Have no idea why Siddke was brought back for the ODIs; was ordinary in this format 8-10 years ago, why would he be better at this stage of his career?

As for Finch's captaincy, don't know why he brought back Lyon for that final over. Dhoni was struggling against the pace and spin was his chance; hitting that six released the pressure for him at a crucial time.

**** that’s well fielded by Lyon.

How many balls have dropped short like that tonight? Three or four at least
I think that's partly because this is one of the least threatening fielding sides I can recall Oz fielding in an ODI.

For decades it seemed an ODI side would have 6-7 top-class fielders in it who could turn a match with a great catch or run out. Who is a threat like that in this side? Probably only Maxwell, with a couple of strong ground fielders like Handscomb.

Apart from that most of the rest ranged from honest tries to a sluggish liability (Siddle). Having said that, they fielded pretty well most of the way, although they wilted a bit in the closing overs.
