Murali Vijay does have some strokeplaying talent. It's a shame it isn't built on a strong base of technical solidity. Would have been nice to have a free-scoring type player in the team. I wonder if he could work as a converted middle-order batsman (like Laxman) somewhere down the line, with a couple of solid openers to see off the new ball, like Gambhir and Mukund.

He right now is a decent opener only in conditions where the ball is not doing anything at all for the seamers or even when the spinners are on top.
But has technical and mental problems too as soon as there is extra bounce or seam or swing movement.
Mukund is a better all conditions bet ,though he may may be far from perfect too right now and is younger too.

Vijay has stokemaking ability for sure though ,but strangely has been even worse in ODI's than he has been in tests.

The competition for middle order slots is even tougher and is going to be in the future,so he would really have to improve to get in there too.
Wouldn't put him in the middle order ahead of the other options at all right now.

Though having said that ,don't think he is still a complete lost cause.

Edit - If i may add the worst part about him is that he keeps getting out the same way everytime and still does not seem to be able to overcome it.A bit like Yuvraj in tests.
Atleast the likes of Raina have shown some toughness and grit to narrow down their weaknesses.

The West Indies, by being needlessly defensive, have put themselves in a position from which they can't win, and have a reasonable chance of losing. A wicket or two would have made all the difference, even if they had conceded a few runs while trying for it.

Laxman does not slog sweep.

He comes down the wicket and drives out of the rough through mid - wicket. Ask Warne

Yeah, but at the same time that line out of the rough is naturally tougher for Raina in any case.

Would have sent in Harbhajan myself and told him to play a quick cameo. Raina considering form not the worst choice though..

I thought of Harbhajan as well but sometimes pinch-hitters can be a bad idea in situations like this and actually end up slowing down the innings' momentum.
