India = Best team in the world. Far better than Australia.

Munaf Patel is faster than Shoaib and Brett Lee combined.

Oh sorry, I was just trying to fill the other polar end of the stereotypical Indian supporter we're seeing come to the fore. There's two exaggerated ends, the absolute bagging of the team where they are eaten alive by the supporters, and the unbelieavable exaggeration of their talents. One end generally leads to the other. Once, and only once this lesson is learnt will balanced viewpoints be seen. VRV Singh is one of the perfect examples, as he was built up to be this pace king machine, and now has been fed to the lions.
Thank you. We needed a return to sanity in this thread.

Do I also recall suggestions that Munaf Patel could play as a decent number eight/big hitter? He looks like a real number eleven to me...

Is all this exposing how weak India's domestic cricket is? We are seeing players who were big performers in Ranji and even Duleep cricket looking way short of Test level.

I think Arjun was proposing that he was a handy lower-order batsman/slogger. Even that was probably based on some breezy scores that we saw from him rather than anyone actually having seen him bat. His technique is obviously terrible and he's definitely a test number 11, but I won't be surprised if we see him go Afridi-crazy if given the liberty at some point.

He might have based his analysis on some reports that Munaf used to hit big sixes in local cricket. Anyway, Laxman goes. Jaffar needs to get a big hundred now that he is in.

Because Arjun suggested Munaf as a no. 7 and he isn't? I don't think so. Whilst i do agree that the Indian domestic structure could do with improvement, most of the recent picks have been alright.
Munaf has done a decent job with the ball in Tests, Sreesanth has been bowling really well except for this Test. VRV might have been a bit of a punt. Moving on to the batsmen, Raina might have some weakness wrt to footwork, but I would back him to come good.. I may be missing some players.....

Irfan Pathan = India's answer to Andrew Flintof.. (Wonder who argued that). So much for being the not-so-stereotypical supporter. 8-) 8-)

Atleast three:

that does not make him a batsman, or even a number 8, though.

btw, congrats to Jaffer on a good 100, he needs to carry on
edit: look for maharashtra v mumbai jan 10 2006, ranji trophy

On another note, Jaffer looks like the next Indian candidate to scrap around for 10 Tests and then get dropped for no reason other than you need to average 50 to bat in the Indian side...

so india ends the day at 215/2 with a good hundred from jaffer which wiped out the lead and has given a little momentum to indian innings. i hope team india can build on this and make somewhere close to 400 in the second innings. Still not good enough to win a test, but maybe force a draw.

Yea, with the state of our bowling attack and the condition of the pitch, I'm not sure that you could declare even with a lead of like 300+ and a day to play.

Mr. Chappel continues to Chirp on Pathan :-

"As for Pathan, he understands why he is not playing. Probably the break would do him good. It wouldn't have been good for him to come out and bowl badly. It would have been a dent to his confidence. It's important he regroups and comes back and I am sure he would. I am confident that he would play in the series at some stage or the other but we thought the other options were the better ones."

If you're still whining about that, just shut up. Dropping (even if they say "resting") Pathan for one test was a good move.

hope indian batting comes good in the 2nd innings....good start so far....they need to expand this lead to at least above 320 - 350 to have any chance in this match....

India should set a target of 300 by lunch time (~3 rpo in 1st session) and 420 by tea time (~4 rpo in 2nd session). At that point the lead will be almost 300. Hopefully wickets will be in hand and Dhoni is still there to score quick runs and set a target around 375 and give our seamers 15 overs (half of the 3rd session) to have a go at the WI batsmen.
