I doubted him greatly, but Brian Lara is leading this team beautifully. A comment was made that West Indies need Brian Lara the leader, not the batsman, and although he hasn't been scoring a lot of runs since his return, his leadership has been superb.
The faith he put in Jerome Taylor and Dwayne Bravo in a pressure situation on Thursday seemed to work wonders for their maturing process and confidence, and it showed again today. He entrusted Samuels with bowling at difficult stages and was well-rewarded. He then gave Taylor responsibility and was rewarded for the most part.
His field placements were proactive and aggressive and showed that he read the situation perfectly and was more interested in winning the game than letting India lose it.
In the field, Lara was electric and everyone followed his lead. Certainly, he did not look like the oldest man in world cricket. The catching was class under pressure, and the bowling was generally where it needed to be. Most impressive was the faith he showed in Dwayne Bravo, by allowing him to bowl the final over despite giving up 9 off the 48th.
Bravo had 3-0-21-0 and Edwards had 3 overs left at that stage, so it wasn't a straightforward decision.
Bravo then repaid that confidence. Right now it seems Lara is building diamonds under pressure and though the West Indies have a long way to go, there are definitely improvements very evident.
Rally.
