***Official*** India in South Africa

Anyone else think Dhoni could struggle to get back in the side here? His batting certainly hasn't made much impact in the Test arena and Karthik gives the option of playing the extra batsman in the middle-order. Have to see how he goes with the gloves though.

Struggling to understand India’s thinking here, the wicket is a flat as anything you we this year and is even more ridiculous than the track New Zealand and South Africa scored heavily on last spring yet Sehwag doesn’t open. Regardless of form last time he was given a flat track (Gros Islet, St. Lucia) he nearly scored a run a ball double ton. Its fair to say he has no form but he was hardly killing it then but given a wicket where the ball struggled to get over thigh height and he cashed in big style. For all Dinesh Karthik’s hardwork his future with India is hardly long term, his a short term fix yet he opens which I find rather bizarre considering there is no chance that he will open yet along play in England this summer. Fair play to the guy his going to score a big hundred it looks like and improve his average of 11 or 10 considerably.

Unlucky there Harris could have had his first test wicket, Dinesh Karthik playing a Ganga esque innings…

Regardless of how flat a pitch might look, you don't know it's flat until you've played on it. Given that, India's decision to open with Karthik made perfect sense (at least more than opening with Sehwag again). Sehwag is low on confidence right now, so chances are he may have thrown it away early on even on a flat track. Now he has a platform to launch from and a better chance to strike form. As for Karthik, he is a long-term option for India. He's a better test prospect than Dhoni tbh - the only reason Dhoni is still there is because he exploded on the one-day scene and he hasn't exactly failed in test cricket yet. I'm not saying Karthik has secured the test keeper's role already, but he's certainly in the long-term plans.

Awesome stuff here.

Odds now Jono?
Lol, I realise I'm getting a reputation of the betting guy :shy: :p

Anyway I have been checking out the odds. Before the match I already put money on "South Africa not to win", which was paying well over $2.00, so that's looking really good right now, as even a draw will result in money won.

Current odds are:
SA: 9.00
India: 3.75
Draw: 1.40

Its tea time, and Dravid is yet to bat. Loving this.

I remember I was going to post pre-game "It'd be great if Dravid doesn't have to bat before lunch" but feared a backlash when Jaffer or Karthik fell in the 2nd over or so. Looking even better now.

:-O You'd have a piece on India at those odds. They're in a very good state with Sehwag, Dravid, Tendulkar, Laxman, Ganguly to come.

A much needed break for both the batsman. Karthik was losing his concentration a bit. The break should help him. I am banking on these two playing till the days play. Losing a wicket 10-12 overs before the days play would be bad for the batsman coming in as well. Another 100-105 runs in the remaining overs would be gr8.

True but the Indians knew the wicket was flat yesterday hence the reason why Sehwag was kept in the side. He was a goner until their saw the wicket, if it had any sort of grass than Karthik would have not opened and if South Africa would have batted first then Karthik still would have not opened regardless of the state of wicket. As I said his a short term fix, doubtlessly this innings might change that opinion but like Jaffer's double ton against the West Indies a few low score failures on competitive wickets and the knifes will be out and Gautam Gambhir suddenly becomes the best thing since sliced bread.

IMO, and this is only the way I'm looking at it, this test has no influence on the team composition of the Indian test team in the future, well at least from the batting POV.

I am seeing this test as India doing what they can, with the resources they have available, and with the state of the series and pitch, to not lose the series and if possible, record a historic win. For all we know, Karthik may replace Dhoni but go to 7, Sehwag may return to the top of the order and Ganguly could be out for Yuvraj by the next time India play a test match.

I'm looking at this match in isolation. Try and win the series, at least don't lose it, and we'll go from there post-World Cup.

Spot on. All that matters is that we pull off a historic series win in South Africa.

Sehwag opening on this wicket and scoring a ton or a double ton would be the ideal case and lot more positive and confident move. But since the kind of form sehwag was the team was just not confident enough to let sehwag open. It might look to be a bit defensive approach but the confidence level in the opening pair was just too low. Even sehwag must be cursing himself by now if only he had scored even one 70 or 80 in his previous 4 innings he would have surely opened. I hope sehwag learns something from this mistake of his and is a bit cautious whenever he opens whether its flat or not.

I cannot believe I am saying this. First off, I despise Dhoni with every fiber of my being. I will never forget Mumbai 2006.

With that said, he hasn't done anything wrong to warrant being dropped. Played some bad shots, but he was better than most of the top order batsmen.

Now if Karthik puts up a big century, then it becomes more difficult.

There are 34 overs remaining, don't know if we'll get all of them in. If we do, another 140 runs should be the targets, ending the day around 290-300.

Dhoni and Karthik will go into the tour of England pretty much even IMO. Dhoni's hopes will rest partially on how he fares in the World Cup, but I reckon he should get the first test against England. After that, the keeper's spot is there for the taking.
