You know what he meant :). You can be a defensive player and be immensly talented.
Exactly. It's similar to McGrath - not a pace demon but anyone who thinks he isn't talented deserves multiple bitchslaps.

So your instincts don't come from your brain or heart, where do they come from?

I've always had problems with that philosophy. These guys are quality test batsmen - surely they can play in more than one fashion. Kallis gets criticised to the pillar for not being up to up the anti - surely the likes of Tendulkar should face similar criticism if they can't down the anti - particularly when said criticism of Kallis is often unjust anyway...
The flaw with playing defensive all day long is that you're giving the fielding captain many more chances to plan an attack to take your best batsmen out. This is exactly what happened in 2005 when India needed to bat out the last day with 9 wickets in hand on pretty much a dead pitch. But Inzamam was allowed to use different tactics almost every over since he didn't need to worry about his bowlers getting attacked.

Another use for playing naturally is that the more runs the bowlers get hit for, the less attacking they will be, for the most part. It will demoralize them.

And the flaw of playing aggressively or "naturally" is that you're giving the bowler many more chances to actually get you out.

I don't think Smith will be too worried about his bowlers getting attacked to be honest - Inida have very little chance of winning. Smith will know he can attack with limited risk.

Again, not if they know the match situation.

You're underestimating how much bowlers dislike going for runs IMO, and besides, India aren't chasing 500. If they get off to a good start and add 100 in the first session or so, Smith will be forced to drop the field back a bit.

The key in this sort of situation is to give up on risky shots but not give up on scoring runs. For two examples, look at Ponting's knock at Old Trafford in 2005 to save the test where he made 150 in the day, compared to England's performance in Adelaide last month. Or even India attempting to save a test against Pakistan a couple of series back. If India go out with the mindset that they have to bat 90 overs and not that they should be scoring runs, they'll end up getting themselves out and have a whole day against confident bowlers with aggressive fields. If they put the bad deliveries away they'll put pressure back on the bowlers and force Smith to keep the target in mind.
