No Kohli. Probably the most likely of the 3 to get a score in these conditions so pretty big loss. Not naming rahane captain also a bit weird. Hope we don't crash and burn vs Olivier.

Yeah, I'm not convinced about that. Batting is their weakness and they've made it even weaker.
I get the idea of always wanting to play a spinner, but if they're hellbent on doing so even at the Wanderers then surely Linde is the better option as he's the better batsman?

Would've been interesting to see India bowl to that brittle looking SA lineup up front. Probably the right call to bat tho.

Fantastic point actually. Linde at 7 with Jansen at 8 makes so much sense. Rabada is an excellent 10 and a passable 9 but a weak 8.

Kohli's absence is indeed a big blow, but am sure we'll do OK. Hope Pujara and Rahane regain some form, will have to take more responsibility.

Yeah Kohli is quite a loss, and not just for his batting. I hope his leadership isn't missed.

They like Jansen (which I understand), don't want to drop Maharaj (which I agree with), but want to play Olivier. So dropping Mulder makes most limited sense. It truly stupid long term and makes no sense from a team building perspective, and from a balance perspective. But hey decent selection policy was thrown out long time ago for SA...Dropping Mulder and making Jansen bat at 7 is incredible really. While they didn't bowl well on that first day I can't fathom how the bowling was decided as the bigger issue.
Jansen doesn't even have a FC centurysomeone explain this to me? Please.

Mulder has actually been very good with the ball as a fourth seamer since coming into Tests. No indication that he wouldn't be up for the task here. I just feel like they have handicapped themselves before a ball has been bowled.
Yeah India have Ashwin at 7 but he has 5 Test tons right? Some proven results.

Thakur at 8 too. Have my doubts how he'll cope with these conditions but he's pulled off several incredible innings in a short career.

That's quite a weak tail. Jansen is like Thakur in batting I suppose. Perfect 8 but too high at 7.
