How long will he be termed a rookie out of interest? This is his 19 Test match.
He's no longer a rookie, but he doesn't have the experience to be the leading pace bowler in an international team though.

With Ganguly opening, and not being that adept at facing the new ball, it could prove disastrous generally. It is a slow pitch and that is a comforting factor in this regard.

In more helpful conditions Dravid would be the much better option. After seeing the pitch play I have to say, here Ganguly possibly could be a better option so as to not expose Dravid.

Hasn't he been doing it for just about his whole Test career though?

Its only 12 months ago he wasn't selected against South Africa despite being fully fit when India went in with 1 seamer and 3 spinners. Zaheer was chosen ahead of him.

If he was the leading pace bowler all his career he probably wouldn't be dropped when fit.

So if Ganguly opens and averages more than Gambhir, has he not done the job required of him?
No. Because poor performances of Gambhir isnt the benchmark to see if he has done the job required.

His bowling is an added bonus, which was probably IMO the thing that tipped the balance towards selecting him - otherwise, who would've come on as first change?
Except the bowling isnt an added bonus like it is made out to be. He is no better than an Adam Hollioake (for want of a better example). If you really werent confodent of 4 bowlers doing the job (I have maintained India should have played 5 bowlers) a 5th bowler would be the better option.

Pathan finally gets the breakthrough, Malik out as I figured he be out, playing an attacking shot away from the body. Unfortunately for India he had already scored a handy half century before he was dismissed that way.

Yousuf to the crease now. Hopefully we can get rid of him early and get Inzamam in ASAP.

Yes.. keep playing rash shots. :D
As Imran said, you either have to bowl absolutely brilliantly or the batsman must bat really poorly to take 20 wickets on this pitch. When you look at the run out of Butt and Malik's dismissal, it seems to be going that way as well.

Kumble's LBW shout just then looked closer than Rudi believed though IMO.

Lol, trust me this pitch isn't assisting pace bowlers.
I know this pitch isnt assisting pace bowlers. Harbhajan has found some vicious turn on the pitch and Kumble is getting some turn in his deliveries. Looks like a turning pitch though.

Turn alone will not do the trick. It needs to be complemented by either pace or bounce, both of which are clearly lacking in this surface.

A big turn wont get you wickets on a wicket which is slow and there is little purchase off the pitch.

Inconsistent performance of the ball is the only hope as cracks come up later in the test match or spells of absolute brilliant bowling on this pitch.

Pakistan should try stepping up the scoring rate in the last session. The way this pitch is playing, a team will need a considerable ammount of time and overs to bowl the other out. A score of around, or in excess, of 300 today will go a long way towards clarifying Pakistani intentions and setting up a potentially threatening first innings total.

Excellent session for Pakistan and as Eddie remarked I think the pitch will be rather different once Akhtar gets on it and for that matter Rana Naved.

agarkar looks like such a harmless little thing out there. his repeated inclusion in the test squad is far more disturbing than ganguly's inclusion (as an opener?) today. for god's sake, the man is averaging nearly 50 in test cricket. we might as well play 7 specialist batsmen, 1 wk and 3 bowlers.

Younis Khan raises his third consecutive hundred against the Indians with a magnificent shot.

Well played.

Younis loves playing against India doesn't he? Jesus, now I know how Pakistanis must feel with Sehwag. ;)

Younis Khan is fairly underrated, because of the calibre of other number 3 batsman around the world. He's a very solid player, and continues to improve the more cricket he plays.

I bet it'll look a bit quicker when Shoaib has a go on it.

(I thought you guys said it was subscription-only?)
Yep. But even the Pakistani bowlers wont be happy with the wicket I am sure.

Sounds like Younis Khan is playing a cracking innings.

100 partnership in less than 25 overs.
