*Official* India in Pakistan Thread

If you ask me, I'd say the Indians should field first and then score the runs quickly in the 2'nd innings, since the pitches are very flat. I would prefer to have Karthik dropped for a few matches and a specialist wicketkeeper behind the stumps- Dravid was lucky to take the catch. Sehwag should bowl the full 10, but I doubt if Ganguly or Sachin should really bowl even 1 over, when 10 more are needed.

I agree with you that it would actually be good for India if they bat second. They will know exactly what to score and with the batting lineup that they possess they should be confident chasing down any total.

But I don't think Karthink should be dropped. WHile it is true Inzamam hit him for a few in the beginning of his spell, Karthink came back very well and got both the wickets of Inzamam and Younis Khan. The ball he bowled to Younis Khan was very good and well disguised.

About the specialist WK, India only have Parthiv Patel and he is just as bad as Dravid is behind the stumps. We can't be confident that he won't drop catches. BTW, his head is too small for the helmet he wears and he can't even sight the ball.

A clip from the above linked article which I particularly find interesting and relevant...

They can see that Abdul Razzaq is half the bowler he once was. Why can't you? They can see that Shoaib Malik is useful, but not a wicket-taker. Why don't you? They can see that Mohammad Sami is just as likely to implode as he is to explode. Why won't you? They can see that there is no need for nine batsmen. Why not you? And they can see that Pakistan need at least three front-line bowlers and a sixth option, but you resist this obvious strategy.
Clearly not clued in on Razzaq's allround brilliance. ('tis but sarcasm folks)

Javed Miandad

I also just wanted to make a quick comment about Javed Miandad. I don't think he should be standing out on the balcony and waving his arms around. The players are playing at a high level of cricket...they don't need coaching when they are actually out on the field. They know what to do and are not exactly novices. I think what Miandad does distracts them and it is not good for the side. I can understand his passion but he should cool it.

I agree but Moin khan looked confused and nervous as it was in the last over.Miandad was puting him off.

Credit where it's due please. Dravid took the catch where others may have dropped it, and there's always a certain amount of luck involved with caught-behinds off spinners. It's helped a great deal by general anticipation skills and decent-ish technique, and even in that respect I trust Dravid more than Patel.

Nehra's injury is really quite sad. I suppose One thing to be thankful for is that these are ODI's and not Tests. I hope they rest him for a few more matches and see if he's really match fit again. Something really should be done about the fitness threshold that the BCCI employs. Fitness certificates aren't enough, and somehow it seems that the pressure to get key players into key games overrides their performances in the nets, or in fitness testing. How often do we see an injured player fast-tracked into a side only to be injured again? And most often, the player in question is never convinced of his fitness and doesn't put all he has into the game. It would be unfair to say that this happens only with the BCCI(although it's happened with Zaheer, Harbhajan, Kumble, Nehra), and while I'm aware of the difficulty in judging a player's "match fitness" (especially with bowlers), this really should be taken up at the ICC level -- to protect players' careers if nothing else.

I hope I'm not making portentious statements about Nehra's career. I was really impressed with how he raised his game for the first match, both with his bowling and his fielding. It would be quite sad if this injury is serious. He really does need to implement Bruce Reid's recommendations about his back foot in the delivery stride (Can someone find that interview with Reid?)

As for the second match, Ganguly seems to be suffering from a fever, so it may be that VVS comes in for Ganguly, Powar for Badani, and Pathan for Nehra. If not, then I suppose either Pathan or Powar will miss out. I think Pathan should be left out simply because he's too young and too raw. However, as Gilchrist and Hayden have found out, he does possess the "magic ball factor". Also, reports say that the pitch is on the slower side, so Powar's spin wouldn't be a bad bet.

Arjun, you made a fair point about Ganguly being unable to handle Kartik. But I think he's getting better with him; consider the fact that he reintroduced Kartik into the attack(albeit under serious duress, since everyone else was being hammered) after he was creamed and Murali obliged by taking two wickets and winning the match for him. I don't think Kartik should, or can, be dropped to make way for anyone. The Indian captain needs to learn how to marshall a good spinner. Kumble doesn't count because his bowling can carry itself, with or without an obliging captain.

Nehra out of second match!

Nehra's injury is a blow to Indian team, the good thing is that India has deepth in its pace attack and Irfan Pathan, a highly promissing left armer, will be taking Nehra's place.

Ganguly might and might not play, he is suffereing from Fever. I don't think Ganguly as a batsmen will be missed that much as compared to Ganguly as a brilliant captain(if he doesn't play)

This game will be Akhter's 100 match of his career, i hope Sachin and Sehwag both hit 100's to make Akhter's 100th match truely memorable.

Pak will be under tremendous pressure to win the match, on other hand Indian player are enjoying the tour and are positive in their approach.I think if India wins the second onedayer , then they will eventually win the series 5-0.

Nehra's injury is highly unfortunate, but then every third pacer today is getting injured. I think we need to cut down on ODI to protect bolwers career.

Playing 5 ODI on subcontinental heat before a full fledge all important test series seems rather odd to me really.

please dont embarrass rest of the indian supporters

Rahul Dravid would do a much better job.
I wonder what Ganguly has done that most of the people around the world hate him?????? 75 % of non-Indians do hate him, while atleast 4 out of ten Indians i met have something negative to say about Ganguly.

Now i'm not saying that he's the greatest or anything like that but the fact is that Ganguly has done what Gavaskar,Kapil,Azhar and Tendulkar failed to do in past. That is make Indian team a real world power. Its a fact that its only because of Ganguly that youngsters like Kaif,Ajit, Yuvraj and Pathan are so successful. As long as Ganguly is the leader of our team, we are on right path.

I dont like Ganguly for some of the reasons that others do. And am not against the negative tactics he uses(slowing the pace of the game) because he is doing that for the team.

What i dont like is his commitment in the field(whish is reason enough to be out of the team) and the way he treats kartik(and others he doesnt like kumble etc.).

Update:

Pakistan win toss and decide to pad up.

Pakistan 53/0 (7 overs)

Afridi - 20* (21 balls)
Hameed - 24* (21)

Two things have shocked me about that scorecard and they are:

1) Shahid Afridi is still in after 7 overs.
2) Shahid Afridi has faced 21 balls and is yet to hit a maximum.

:)

Jeepers, as soon as I post that.....next ball:

7.1 Khan to Shahid Afridi, SIX, goodness me! good length outside the off stump, Afridi gets under it and lofts it away to the mid wicket boundary, that went a long way, eagle eye!

That is scary....:O

Well duh, one match is firstly a test match heading towards a draw being played in dreary old Hamilton while the other is the opening to an ODI Series where India is travelling to Pakistan for the first time in 14 years. And no doubt the amount of runs being scored in that match had something to do with it also!.
Did you honestly have to take that personally? It wasn't an attack on NZ, it was just a simple observation.

You still can't deny that Indian and Pakistani atmospheres are far superior to those of NZ cricket. It's not an attack on your country its simple logic with the population each country has compared to NZ. I don't see why you'd have to take it personally.

And another just like the other:

8.1 Balaji to Shahid Afridi, SIX, glorious! pitched up outside the off stump, perfecly in the slot, lofted over the long off fence, another big hit.

BOOM. :D

Update.

Pakistan - 80/0 (9 overs)

Afridi 42* (29 balls)
Hameed 28* (25)
