Australia got 500 on day 1 against Steyn and Morkel. Don't think this scoreline is anything unprecedented. We've bowled complete tripe but it hasn't quite translated onto the scoreline. And considering Australia are 520/7 that's saying something.

Get the feeling Smith's average is only on the up from here,.The new Steve Waugh indeed, turning into a real hard-nosed cricketer.

The value of the toss in test cricket has always annoyed me. It's a 5 day game for Christ's sake and a 20% advantage lies with the flip of a coin. At Adelaide it's probably 40% - which is why we call Adelaide 06 "amazing Adelaide"

Nah Adelaide isn't really toss-dependent because the pitch stays roughly the same over both first innings. It's scoreboard pressure more than pitch dynamics which lead to the lopsided results in favour of the side batting first.

Sometimes it breaks up on Day 5. It's pretty toss dependent when you get four days of road and one day of a moderate turner. Doesn't always happen though.

imho it has heaps to do with batting the oppostion into submission where they are tired and feeling like all they can achieve is a draw and don't have a Shane Warne to drag them up and over the line ( who does?)....unless you collapse in the 1st inn at Adel you are assured of victory/draw. Having said that I would love to see stats of teams batting 2nd at Adelaide

Yeah that's what I mean by scoreboard pressure, but idk if you can call that "toss-dependency"

5/1 odd on Rahane to be the top-scorer in Indian 1st innings is lucrative imo. I've put some money there.

India are so so bad

This Series could be the most lopsided we've seen out here since Windies 2000/2001

Just a hunch, but I think India is totally World Cup focussed, with the Tests an opportunity to acclimatise

I'd argue India's last series was more lopsided, tbh.

I love how everyone acts surprised every time Indian bowling attacks concede runs easily, but no one criticizes our bats when they fail to match up scores put up by the opposition on the same wickets (whether flat or helpful).

Can certainly see your point, but can't think of a better way to do it than performing an action that statistically offers a dead even 50% chance for both sides.

You couldn't have a home court advantage system like the NBA finals, ie one chooses, next chooses etc and one gets a 3-2 or 2-1 split in an oddly-numbered series, given that then throws up the possibility of bigger advantages in certain Tests - ie Sydney, Adelaide etc.

It's certainly worth a discussion though. Not a perfect example, but Pakistan did win all 3 Tests they won the toss in and didn't win any of the two they didn't in the UAE recently. So it's clearly a distinct advantage - how you'd eliminate it, or even if you need to, is another question.
