Wouldnt be gushing over kohli as captain yet. Made a few Funky field placements in the second innings but aside from that Was pretty poor.

Whatever it takes!!!
nothing about the tactical side to be honest.. I was talking about the leadership aspect and the extra responsibility seeming to make him play better. And I think he has the right end result in mind most of the time, even though his captaincy was seeming like trying too much too soon.. I am sure those areas will take care of themselves in the long run as long as he can maintain the other aspects I talked about. Having said that, this is Indian Cricket and we have seen so many false dawns that I know better than to even hope... :(

surprised at kohli's post match conference, pleasantly surprised that is. What a stark contrast from Dhoni's post match conferences. So much better and giving credit to the opposition as well

Saw the last two sessions. Heartbreaking loss but still much better than I expected. Reminded me a lot of that Chennai test of 1999. Sad to see our decline as players of spin and also that none of our pacers know one end of the bat from the other. Seems like we would need Ashwin back to strengthen our lower order. Karn wasn't too bad but needs a lot more work.

If Karn offers significantly more as a bowler then there really is no need to bring Ashwin back. India don't need a strong tail but they do need good bowlers. Ashwin isn't anything special overseas.

The thing about Kohli's captaincy was that all though it was far from brilliant in the match he;s reasonably young and I can honestly see the lad developing his captaincy skills a bit, might as well give him the reigns permanently no way can he do worse than Dhoni in the tests.

I've only felt sadder maybe when Sachin scored that 136. Joburg was terrible, but in the end, it was a relief that we escaped with a draw. Auckland wasn't painful really... we conceded a ridiculous lead and though we turned it around, I never really believed we could win it. Wellington probably the worst one of all, but just the fact that this was an Australia test made it feel bigger and made me want the team to win it more. Really really depressing, especially as it's coming on the back of those other near wins. Just another one to add to the list. Keep getting close and letting it slip. :(
Ya, it was sadder when we couldn't chase 120-odd in West Indies too.

Hmm.. I get what you're saying, but if India has a strong tail and they perform at their 'strong level', India lead the series 1-0.

yeah but I meant that having a stronger tail in this case meant that they would compromise even more on their bowling. So whatever runs the tail brings is more than offset by worse bowling.

Dunno buds. No reason why Ashwin couldn't have used the same foot marks as Lyon. He could have been more effective than Karn for that reason plus his batting.

It's all swings and roundabouts. Australia could have played Hazelwood instead of Siddle. Fact is it was a great test match, probably made closer by the lost time on day two when Australia was batting on the best of the wicket. Full respect to India for having a go at the target right to virtually the end.

On a different tangent, it shows once again how spurious the "slow over rate" argument is re test cricket. True it is teams used to bowl 100+ overs in a day, but that was the same era where sides would make 4/220 in a day. **** that. This era is so much more entertaining.

How good was Johnson's first nut with the second new ball? Very few batsmen would have kept that out IMO

I don't think India can really be gutted to lose this as much as the Eden Park test because they never bowled the Aussie side out. The first innings declaration was particularly sporting. Quite different games really; this pitch was much flatter.
