Because it's way ****ing harder to bat in the middle order than at the top of the order in ODI's. It's not rocket science, it's the same reason De Villiers bats 4/5 for SA and Dhoni comes in later on. Yes it means they have less time to build an innings but if they are at the top and don't make 100+ then you get guys coming in behind them who just aren't good enough to take the game away. Batting in the top 3 in ODI's is the easiest gig in the format, so it giving it to the less elite players gives them far more of a chance to succeed. Pete ****ing Forrest made an ODI hundred opening the batting for ****s sake.

Maybe your less chance of making 400 but your sure as **** less likely to be rolled.
Interesting point. Don't think it applies in Aus/NZ as it would on the Subcontinent. The white ball moves loads, and a few quite overs can lead to a lot of pressure. A bad start can even kill a runchase.

Yes the ball will swing for roughly the first 20 overs, but there'll be fewer slips to begin with and there'll be a bowling change after 10 overs. Most teams' third seamer gets significantly less movement than their opening bowlers - this is usually the team's specialist death bowler. Get through the first 10 and you get to this bowler. Get through 15-20 and you'll either see the spinner or the team's 5th bowling option. That's piss easy.

I'd back Kohli to get through 5-10 overs of quality bowling (i.e. the opening bowlers) on most occasions. Especially when he knows that's all he has to do before it becomes much easier.
Why risk it though, especially when we have not much to follow after Kohli. It's pretty much a guarantee that if he walks in after the first 20 he's going to bat and bat and be impossible to dismiss until he starts hitting out. It also means we have a solid platform set for us. If we've lost 2 wickets early, we are in trouble, and Kohli can come out to save us. It works very well both ways.
It also maximises the output we get from Rahane -who is great at finding the gaps in the first 15- and Rohit and Raydu - both slow starters who aren't very good at rotating the strike. Rayudu and Rahane aren't very good big hitters either. Kohli is so much better at 4 than all of them.

Well yeah there's no point batting behind guys who are neither good enough to bat up the top or in the middle.

My confusion comes from that isn't 3 where he usually bats and have played most of his amazing innings in?

Seems so weird to change it so recently.

Pretty damn good result for india this. Was hoping for an india defeat so England could give a runout to some of the squad players in the last qualification match.

Absolute farce. If we lose but not by a bonus point on Friday then the tournament final will forever have an asterisk next to it and the world will know we were robbed of yet another trophy.

Honestly, reckon this was a BCCI conspiracy. I'm so mad.

No. If I meant when I'd have typed it. As I typed if, I meant if. Not hard, even for a below average intelligence type like yourself.

The only way I'd have meant when is if I'd posted 'when Jono posts some drivel I'm gonna roll my eyes like this 8-)'

Disappointed that today's match was rained out, but at least we know what we need to do, beat England and make the final, it's a real chance to show that our performance against England in the last game was an aberration which given the ODI performances of both teams in recent times you would have to say it was.

What's your role in the team? I thought saying we is frowned upon on these forums.. One rule for one...

India versus England is now a virtual semi final. And since it's probably the only time England will be in a "semi" savour the moment!

Glad the match versus Australia was called off. So many interruptions screw up the batting side.

Dhoni is still experimenting I see with the team order in batting or bowling. Hope he actually takes the last match seriously.

Do people frown upon that round here now? If so they need to have a lend of themselves. Passionate supporters always refer to their team as 'we' in all sports and should continue to do so. Don't let Prince EWS or any other tool tell you otherwise.
