he does not look an international standard batsman, franklyWon't be too critical considering he was asked to accelerate, but this shot highlights Rayudu's limitations. Just doesn't have enough options when it comes to scoring boundaries.
Wouldn't that mean you open him?I still don't understand why kohli is not at 3. Surely you want him to have as much time as possible to build an innings?

Have to give him a bit of a buffer against the swing.Wouldn't that mean you open him?
I think with Rohit and Rahane opening we can bank on them playing out 6-7 overs upfront as compared to Dhawan who just looks a walking wicket. If there is one thing Rohit is good at it's playing out the first 5-10 overs which is a real plus (especially when batting first) unless we are chasing 300 or something. In these conditions with our top order bats he's going to get plenty of time at number 4 anyways. Less risk of him nicking off early if at 4, and it's not like Rayudu/Binny/whoever will be batting at 4 will do a better job.
Rayudu isn't going to be better or worse at 4. I'd argue he'd be worse cause he's not good at rotating the strike, but clearly he'll struggle against good pace bowling early up as well. So if he's going to be a mediocre performer either way, I'd rather it be early in the innings.
Binny at 4 is interesting. I don't think he's better than Rayudu. He's decent but Rayudu is capable of scoring tons at this level, I don't think Binny is quite there with the bat.
With the Indian seamers and flat pitches I think this will be happening quite oftenunless we are chasing 300 or something.
Because it's way ****ing harder to bat in the middle order than at the top of the order in ODI's. It's not rocket science, it's the same reason De Villiers bats 4/5 for SA and Dhoni comes in later on. Yes it means they have less time to build an innings but if they are at the top and don't make 100+ then you get guys coming in behind them who just aren't good enough to take the game away. Batting in the top 3 in ODI's is the easiest gig in the format, so it giving it to the less elite players gives them far more of a chance to succeed. Pete ****ing Forrest made an ODI hundred opening the batting for ****s sake.I still don't understand why kohli is not at 3. Surely you want him to have as much time as possible to build an innings?
Yes the ball will swing for roughly the first 20 overs, but there'll be fewer slips to begin with and there'll be a bowling change after 10 overs. Most teams' third seamer gets significantly less movement than their opening bowlers - this is usually the team's specialist death bowler. Get through the first 10 and you get to this bowler. Get through 15-20 and you'll either see the spinner or the team's 5th bowling option. That's piss easy. The first 20 overs are basically about survival in these conditions, and I'd rather Kohli walk in towards the end of that than the beginning. We don't need him to be the recipient of an unplayable ball when someone like Rayudu is perfectly sacrifice-able.
