Makes me really disappointed that Mark Craig wasn't selected as the spinner for this series. 4 out of the top 21 4th innings winning performances by spinner in NZ history are by Mark Craig.

Yes, I know he's been crap, I know he leaks runs, and he should deservedly be about 6th choice spinner now. But behind Van Woerkom and basically being told you may as well just retire?

This series is a chance to measure him again, see if he can keep the RPO down on seamy roads v gun players of spin etc ..... see what he's still got.

Our two top current spinners now are SLA (Ajaz and Santner). Over the next decade NZ are eventually likely to have an ever present batting allrounder (Ravindra) who also bowls good SLA, hopefully ..... I don't see much light on the horizon for SLA Van Woerkom.

This has less to do with Mark Craig being a better spinner than others and more about the team he played in actually winning matches tbf. Craig is crap.

He's struggling with injury I'm told. He's not 100% otherwise will have made the cut ahead of Somerville.

As for Theo, they see something decent in him and giving him opportunities. To be honest Ravindra will outbowl most of them anyways. It's a race on for the spinner role between Santner, Patel and Ravindra. All are equally good and I'd sure have two left arm spinning option anywhere in the world. If you can't afford a leggie or if your leggie ain't good enough I'd always back left arm spinners over offies. They offer a lot more than offies due to the angles they create. Santner is a near near finished product with the ball, work in progress with the bat, Patel good with the ball of course and Ravindra probably the one with equally good with bat and ball. Still work in progress in both departments. I'd always have two of these three playing. Gives massive options for good number of years. Patel is a bit of a liability with the bat and field but he could improve on those front.

With Jamieson I think there's an element of - keep doing what you're doing, but 5 or 8 km/h faster - and then you're really in business. It doesn't always work like that of course, but he's 23 and there should be some room for development.

Seems a similar prospect to Jamieson though with a little more spring in his delivery and probably a little more pace. Assume it's just been poor accuracy holding him back up to this point - 78 wickets at 43 even after a good 17/18 season, vs Jamieson's 56 wickets at 25.

I remember seeing tickner for the first time last year. Had plenty of wheels but loads of wasted effort in his action. He's looking much smoother now, hopefully that'll give him both better consistency and a few more clicks.

I'd say most of the dismissals are filth. Phillips' shot is very amateur so is Ravindra's Both balls miles away from stump and they went at it so hard. Seifert was in a bad shape to pull that. Cam Fletcher played all around it. Saw Ravindra show glimpses of his ability but the lad has to learn to bat for days before we can say he has it in him yet. Rain is forecast for the rest of the 3 days so it's going to be a drawn match again. There will be lots of on and off the field stuff.

Will Young making a huge statement here with a hundred batting out of position in conditions where no other batsman passed 20 (even if this is a pretty poor NZA batting lineup - seriously where are Hay and Bruce?). Don't know if any opportunities in the national side are going to open up for him this season, but it's good to see him finally showing some consistency.

I think Young has come of age, it's taken a while for a bloke that is fairly good technician. The 100 vs Pakistan A I thought was an amazing knock with wickets falling all around him. All things going well we should see him play for Black caps this season at home. I'd think he'll never look back once he's in the BC set up.

Didn't realize he had 25 50s and 5 100s prior to this knock. Fleming wouldn't be proud of that record.

I hope he gets a run soon, he's actually good to watch in full flight. Easy on the eye. The opposite of Henry Nicholls I suppose.
