With so much talk of chopping and changing I wonder have I missed something? Why is Joe Root's place not open to question? Talk of dropping Carberry to accommodate Root as Cook's opening partner is senseless. Carberry has often batted at three so put him there and bring Bell in as Cook's partner. Never understood the lack of debate about Bell opening.

Has Bell ever opened in FC cricket? I'm not surprised I've never heard anyone suggest he should open in tests.

He's actually opened in Tests before I believe. The tour of India in which Cook made his debut IIRC.

EDIT: Nope, Poos was right. 4th test in India on the 05/06 tour. No Cook, so presume he had a touch of Ghandi's Revenge.

3rd Test tbh, there was no 4th. And you guess right about Cook - the only Test he's missed since his debut iirc

Conn is now saying Faulkner for George. The pitch looks green and they might want the extra bowling. Can't see how Faulkner adds that much value with the ball in that scenario. If its green our bowlers have shown enough that they won't need an extra bowler. Now if Watsons not going to bowl then its someone to take those overs but he's unlikely to be as effective.

Carberry's best bet of making a significant contribution would come if he batted at 3 I think. Bell has all the attributes of an opening batsman expediency has required that he bat elsewhere. I don't think he is our best bat as he isn't as good as Pietersen, more reliable but not as good.

Surprised but not shocked if this is true. Would rather that than see him shuffled about again. Honestly, should have bumped him to 5 and Bell 3 instead when Trott went.
