I don't think he was really suited to a rigid 4-4-2 formation, which was, iirc, the default setting for the national side during most of his career. Ditto Hoddle of course, from a decade or so previously. It's hard to know what to make of Le Tiss, actually. English football history is littered with talented wasters who fans of a certain age mist over at the mere mention of and mutter something about how it was a tragedy they didn't play more for the national side (Stan Bowles, Franny Lee, Tony Currie, Rodney Marsh, Lee Sharpe, etc) but big Matt wasn't (AFAIK) a pisspot, snatch hound or degenerate gambler, just a big boned lad and his club stats are pretty effing impressive.
It's nice to think he'd have maybe played more for England if he'd had a more sympathetic national coach, but equally there's a slight suspicion he was happy in his comfort zone at The Dell.
True. Maybe someone like Le Tissier just needed the side to be built around him in a way that wasn't going to happen at international level.Tbf throughout the late to mid 90s England used quite a lot of different formations under both Venables and Hoddle. Granted he may not have been suitable for use in the others used either (mainly Christmas Tree and 532 w/wing backs iirc), but it's not like 442 was the only system England ever used back then. Far from it.
You're newly promoted this season aren't you?Oh League One, how I have missed you
To League Two yeah. We were meandering to midtable six weeks ago but all of a sudden automatic promotion back to our ‘natural ’ level seems very real. You're newly promoted this season aren't you?
Then a very Liverpool this season end to the game. So so lucky.Very 2014-Liverpool feel to this performance, playing at a ridiculous speed first half then tiring in the second.
