***Official*** English Football Season 2018-19

Really need Wolves to stop City doing at least the domestic treble. It's the only way to make the season saveable.

BARNES OUT
It would just be unbelievably good if Ole's United came crashing down to Earth.

Would almost be as enjoyable as them being bought by the Saudis, as has been rumoured for some time. What a day on Twitter that would be.

Was just randomly browsing through old football videos this evening, and wondered, was Matt Le Tissier a player massively ahead of his time?

Looking back at how good he was technically, and how creative, it'd be really interesting to see how he would have done were he in his prime nowadays.

Norwood's on Fire
Terrible work rate and fitness levels, but not unreasonable to think he’d have improved that had he been around in the really silly money era. Also hard to see he’d have stayed at Southampton his whole career if he was playing now, and that would have played into the latter too - though it’s not like he was short of offers to leave back then, he genuinely didn’t want to move because of the easy access to Guernsey

Loved him I did. Absolute wizard.

It's hard to know what to make of Le Tiss, actually. English football history is littered with talented wasters who fans of a certain age mist over at the mere mention of and mutter something about how it was a tragedy they didn't play more for the national side (Stan Bowles, Franny Lee, Tony Currie, Rodney Marsh, Lee Sharpe, etc) but big Matt wasn't (AFAIK) a pisspot, snatch hound or degenerate gambler, just a big boned lad and his club stats are pretty effing impressive.

It's nice to think he'd have maybe played more for England if he'd had a more sympathetic national coach, but equally there's a slight suspicion he was happy in his comfort zone at The Dell.

I actually think of him as the opposite of ahead of his time. He sort of milled around waiting for the ball to come to him so he could do something amazing with it. No one does that any more, number 10s these days are constantly showing for the ball. It’s really hard to think of a current PL attacking player who runs as little as Le Tissier did. Balotelli was the last one.

Yeah, I get what you mean. What I was driving at was the fact that a player with his level of technical ability was very much not the norm back in the days when he was at his best. A bit like Bergkamp, played great stuff in the days of kicking.

Criticisms of his work rate, running, and energy levels are slightly OTT though imo. He could absolutely really get a lick on and gun it past defenders if he wanted to, in his earlier days at least. Although most highlight packages of his goals consist of the ridiculous 25 yard volleys etc. there were quite a few where he burst through the defensive line, outstripping those following him, and passed the ball into the bottom corner.

Yeah although I don’t have an opinion on Le Tissier specifically, now that I think about it I’d be pretty sure that’s true. Almost all of the very best technical players are unfairly labelled as lazy in England, and even more so back then. Having a great first touch is much easier if you have a very relaxed posture, which clueless fans and pundits always interpret as ‘not caring enough’.

Yeah, it's one of those weird argument-enders, that shouldn't actually be argument-enders at all. The trump card for debating like a dick.

Although typically applied to technical players, especially these days, it gets thrown about in relation to all players regardless of their actual output. I remember Mark Viduka being a prime example for this sort of thing. Bloke averaged a goal every two games across a career spanning over 500 matches ffs. But no, lazy.

Usually it’s just applied to players because they’re black. The remarkable thing about Ron Atkinson’s career-ending ‘****ing lazy n-word’ comment, apart from how terrifyingly racist it was, is that it was directed at Marcel Desailly. Desailly dominated 90s Serie A, won consecutive European Cups and both major international trophies; imagine how good he’d have been if he tried. And Atkinson, who would know, suggested that this opinion was widespread.

Yeah, a variant on the "lack of intelligence" type comments in that regard I guess. Not sure which is more offensive actually. Probably the intelligence one.

I think Mina Rzouki's article on Lukaku and Morata was the final straw for her with me. I really tried to like her despite how obnoxious she can be, but no. Just a dick.
