Just seen the front pages of Wednesday's Sun and The Times, absolute dire.

Credit to The Metro though, words I thought I would never type.

Police need a slap when it comes to policing football. Unfortunately up here we've got an authoritarian government that passes legislation that is specificallytargetted at football fans.

I read a report of the Old Firm semi final that described it's 'trouble free' as if this was some sort of achievement, when there's not been any trouble in my life time at the game.
They're hugely better than they once were though, but oddly enough there does seem to be a bit more of a shift to authoritarian, I guess partly because of other issues in the World. Yet also probably just new people taking over police and security positions who don't actually seem to realise that less strict policing has (in general) caused much less trouble then the dark days.

I was hugely happy to have given up being a steward when the Northampton game was finished, when they ran on the pitch to celebrate. In the end it's not antagonistic, City fans couldn't give a ****, and it's a big moment for them. I saw pics of our stewards (who I know) rugby-tackling the supporters and getting into rucks. I hope the supporters get 'em fired TBH, ridiculous over-reaction and well beyond your authority.

So ****ing glad I wasn't involved, no way I'd get in the way of a proper fan celebrating his clubs achievement. Just goes to show the majority of people chose security work because they're knobs who actually want trouble. I know they'll say well if we're not going to have fences then fans need to respect the perimeter, but in the ends exceptions should be made for these situations, it's common sense.

Anyway rant over, it was a brief flirtation with being on the other side of the fence (literally), and some of the people were decent, but not something I'll do again.

Haha this is definitely true in the context of the court system as well. I used to deliberately go along to watch on days I knew that agressive defendants were coming in, because the security guards were always spoiling for a fight.

Some of them anyway. There used to be a couple of guys from somewhere in Asia employed by Basingstoke Magistrates' court who were actually too short to reach the panic alarm button.

Same in the police - there are people who join specifically to make their way into riot squadrens just to be in the thick of the action. I know of one ex riot cop who loved it when Rangers fans came and trashed Manchester, because he got paid overtime to suit up and crack skulls. He missed the action (he only transferred out in the first place because they offered him guns to play with instead)

The classic, English ref in a game between two foreign sides, he must be constantly praised.
