PL went to 20 teams in 1995 IIRC, not sure if the First Division was always 22 before that or if they'd tinkered with the formula through the years.
Think it was only 22 for a short period, I'm sure 89/90 was 38 games, might've been 91/92 first season of 42 games

Whilst this is true, the First Division of the Football League was a 22-team division for the vast majority of its history. It was only in the late 80s that they started messing around with it at all. It went from 22, to a brief period of 20, back to 22 and then finally settled back to 20 again once the Premier League was the top division in English football rather than the First Division. IIRC there were also a couple of seasons of 21 teams whilst they were transitioning from 20 to 22 and vice-versa.

Wenger won his first double with 78 points, season before than United won with 75 points. It was quite common for sides around that time to win it with less than 80 points. Chelsea and then City getting rich increased the competition and standard though. Think the average winner last 10 years has been around 86/87 points, but Leicester getting low to mid 80s would still be incredible and make them worthy winners results wise.

Has a team that's finished first ever not been a worthy winner results wise? I mean, isn't that kind of the whole point?

It's about as good a verdict as it could be, but lets remember McKenzie is still employed by the Sun and many of the people behind the cover-up are now long gone, so won't face the consequences of their disgraceful and symptomatic attack on innocents to cover up for an establishment that helped them break the miners.

It's just a dark time in our recent history, press, government and police all united in conspiracy. Hilarious that the Sun keeps citing "free press" when they're just one billionaires plaything to distort everything in his own craven image.
Tbh as despicable as The Sun are and were, I feel they were discredited when the inquiry results came out in 2012. In terms of holding people to account, today firmly points the finger where it needs to be.

As well as any charges for involuntary manslaughter or whatever it may be, Duckenfield and co should face charges of perverting the course of justice and ultimately between them and The Sun there should be enormous damages due to the families and the survivors for all the **** that was said.

So actually I've come full circle on myself, there'll never be complete justice. But at least it's now a matter of public record.

As an aside, in what I felt to be poor timing, Merseyside Police chose today to announce some sort of draconian 'dispersal zone' for our game with Grimsby (a side there is little rivalry with beyond us having each relegated the other from higher divisions a decade or so ago) this weekend. While I wouldn't wish to compare it to the negligent and crass actions of April 89, ultimately an authoritarian approach towards football fans is still the norm. We will never see another Hillsborough again, but I still feel lessons have never fully been learned and that the million or so folk who pass through turnstiles each week will never be treated like the human beings they are.

Police need a slap when it comes to policing football. Unfortunately up here we've got an authoritarian government that passes legislation that is specificallytargetted at football fans.

I read a report of the Old Firm semi final that described it's 'trouble free' as if this was some sort of achievement, when there's not been any trouble in my life time at the game.

Should be, and usually has been. One possible exception may have been Leeds circa 1970 when they were eventually knackered by having to play so many games through reaching the FA Cup Final via loads of replays against Man Utd, as well as the EC semi-finals. In those days, squads were so much smaller than nowadays, so they pretty well collapsed over the final few weeks due to their players running on fumes, as it were.

Maybe Ipswich in 1981 as well. Similar story in terms of a small pool of players running out of steam through reaching the FA Cup semis and winning the UEFA Cup, neither of which were factors for the eventual winners.

Citeh killing off another home CL game here. You really see what the point of the Fernandos is in games like these.

Yeah I agree. I'm not sure whether it's the plan or the defensive players on both sides are just all having better games than the attackers.
