Eh, surely it was 16 at some point even in the CL era?

Or did they go straight to quarters before they let multiple entrants in from one country
They held a round of 16 in 1992-93 and 1993-94 but that really looked more like a qualifying round, the group stage of 8 teams was the next stage

The group stages were 8 teams in 92/93 and 93/94, increased to 16 in 94/95 and went to 24 teams in 1997/98, which was the first season they let in runners up.

Expanded to 32 teams in 1999/2000, but there was a 2nd group stage, we didn't actually get a knockout last 16 until 2002/03 or 03/04.

I'd just like to say isn't modern football great? Open Prem that anyone can win, premium on young English players mean a well-run yoof system can cash-in from the lower-leagues, and Exeter on primetime BBC.

What more could you possibly want from a game?

I agree with Van Gormless. You can't expect a manager who's only spent £300,000,000 to produce a team capable of defending and attacking as a unit.

Oh yes. Chris Sutton get off the TV.

Have Sutton and Robbie Savage been put on today to deflect criticism from Michael Owen in a "look, things could be a lot worse" way?

I find it staggering that a company that has the best 2 football shows on TV by a mile (European Goals Show and Sunday Night Football) get their Premier League coverage so wrong.
