Not that surprising tbh. Without trying to come across too disrespectful, I sometimes wonder the point of loaning out players like that below the Championship.
Would have gone fine at the Bees when we were in league one, clubs just need to be smart about where send these players. Just as much as the problem of style is that these clubs need results, they are not going to play a young guy if he is not going to help them win games. This is how the whole B team thing comes along, horrible idea that it is. The real answer of course is that more young players should be moving to smaller clubs on a permanent basis.

At the risk of sounding all neanderthal, a) it toughens them up and b) it gives them an insight into what life is like if you start coasting because you're Arsenal's star 17 year old and you think you've made it.

Brilliant result imo. Gave the crowd extra excitement as we chased the result, the joys of a penalty shootout, and avoided another tie in a competition we dont care about (despite the first choice players on show)

I'd rather we went through just because I would have watched us in the next round, but meh. Watching United for me mostly just consists of swearing at Rooney through the screen lately anyway. Becoming a hater-fan.

There's a lot of snobbery around this competition. Of course it's the least important, but just an extra four matches from now and there's a trophy on the table. For clubs like Arsenal and Man Utd that's hardly likely to interfere with their chances of winning the big two prizes - one of which their chances are zero anyway. Admittedly Arsenal lost the Ox and Walcott but they're two who will just as easily cripple themselves sneezing.

Anyway no sign of GIMH since Tranmere failed to qualify for the First Round of FA Cup?

Arsenal have suffered 4 muscle injuries in the last 3 midweek games. That kind of thing could decide 5 points. Titles have been won on less.

Also I think there's at least some resentment towards it because it congests the league schedule. The Premier League basically doesn't have the option of hosting a round of midweek games until January which means the league has to start earlier (shorter summer break), has a condensed Christmas schedule (which can see **** like 5 games in 12 days) and midweek games later in the season during the latter stages of the Champions League.

I mean I'm never against more football and I really hope we win it, but if they did away with it I think it would benefit most top sides, but then again it wouldn't benefit everyone else so eh. We have a big squad, we can take it.

Except we've just lost 2 players to injury.

Yeah agreed, there are still quite a lot of thugs even in League 1. Not as bad as it used to be but at times the games are still more about physical effort than finesse.

Yeah it is just a total pain, without it you could easily have a week off at the start of January or something. For years top Premier League sides have been playing weaker sides but you are now at the stage where most Championship sides do as well. It is not all that far of the reserve cup.

So I was watching some football from the 80s the other night, and it was noticeable that the refs allowed quick free kicks more or less unconditionally. The keeper would be setting up the wall and someone would just boot it in the net and the ref would be like "yeah cool". None of the "wait for the whistle" stuff, which now that I think about it I can't understand the reason for. Just seems like a waste of time.

Maybe the end of those days is one reason why there's so much tactical fouling now, even though there are more cards (though still not enough). Maybe defenders would give away fewer free kicks if they weren't guaranteed a full 30 seconds to get themselves ready every time.

I remember when we beat Ipswich 9-0 and for one of the goals the ref was still booking the Ipswich keeper as we took it. Wouldn't get that today.

If they allowed quick free kicks then they wouldn't get to be the centre of attention for 10 seconds while they mark out 10 yards and grafitti the pitch with shaving foam.

This might just be opposition spoiling tactics creeping in after we spent the first 2 months of the season blitzing everyone in our path, but my biggest bugbear with refs at the moment is the refusal to do anything about players who stand 2 yards away from the ball when there's a free kick and who take an age to move.

Well, 2nd biggest bugbear. The biggest gripe is referees tolerating foul play by refusing to get their cards out early.
