Couldn't they make it one of the terms of competing in the FA Cup or Football League?
Maybe, but that in itself would arguably just be a constructive ban on ownership. It'd effectively be a ban in everything but name, and I think you'd have a difficult job convincing a court otherwise.

New 4-year deal for Barkley. Not the most exciting announcement, Lukaku would have been awesome. Ah well, least we've still got Ross for a while yet.

They can't just argue "it's our competition and we can admit whoever we want"? AFAIK Scottish teams aren't allowed entry either, which seems less defensible.

Going back a bit but RE Southampton I honestly think they'll be fine. Won't they have loads more kids coming through in the next few years? Assuming they'll go to the pits because they're losing most of their best players sort of ignores how they got their in the first place. Presumably losing the likes of the OX didn't hinder them too much if they got back to back promotions around that time. Sort of like the people who think Atletico will be considerably weaker because a few of their top players are now at Chelsea.

The money Southampton spent thus far has been done well thus far but they need to be signing more of that ilk - with maybe a few players with Prem experience thrown in (but not too many as I want Jack Stephens playing first team this year :D )

But on the flip side arguing that they will be fine because they have been fine before sort of assumes the conveyor belt will keep on producing.

Honestly who knows if they will be fine or not because it depends to a large extent on what else happens in the rest of the summer but I find it very hard to believe they won't be significantly weaker.

I think I speak for most of the footballing world when I say "who gives a **** about the Saints", feeder club with no ambition cluttering up the top division for years.

Don't hate them, but they're pretty much an irrelevance.

No one loves them. It's just fun when a Championship team turns itself into a mid-table Premiership side by playing more attacking football than everyone else down there, using their youth products, and winning games against top-four teams.

Yeah, but I guess I don't really see them as a Championship team, all through my youth they were Division 1, stayed at the top for ages, with LeTissier. It all just seems depressingly similar that they'll be back to struggling.

It's just a heavy reminder that, in fact, football is all about money. Maybe it is idealistic to want it to be more than that but it's really exciting to see teams get to success differently and it's sad that it's dismantled so cynically. You almost wish there was some transfer restrictions on how many players a team can move in/out in order to make teams at the top be a bit more creative in moulding teams rather than just relying on their brand/money to just swoop up the best prospects. I don't think that's legally viable but should be thought on it. I guess the real problem is that player contracts aren't worth the paper their signed on.

I actually find it hilarious that a team that finished just above Stoke has bent the top teams over to the tune of 100 million quid for a few players

Southampton's billionaire owner is laughing all the way to the bank

That's a really strange post for such a hardened libertarian to make.

Mostly bought by Liverpool too.

Yeah I've said it before but this is roughly my view too.

Shhhh. If you mention that too loud, Kenwright'll padlock up his wallet again. Let us just enjoy the fact we've actually signed a world-class player, and kept our most promising prospect since Barkley. Been an amazing transfer window so far!
