Yeah at his best he basically negated any need for Chelsea to pass the ball competently, because putting it anywhere in the opponent's half generally meant Drogba somehow winning it or getting a free kick. So they could just pack the team full of guys who were great at defending. Also probably more of a big-game player than any Prem striker ever.

Since saying "can't compare them" is a cop-out I'd put him behind Henry, Blackburn-era Shearer, and probably Suarez and Aguero. But better than guys like Bergkamp, Van Nistelrooy and Rooney. Basically towards the bottom of the very top tier.
Agree. Not better than Bergkamp though

Yeah was Uppercut drunk when he said that? Bergkamp > all

Surprised by that stat from Cabinet. I remember back when Torres was good (no, seriously) there used to be a bit of a Torres V Drogba debate to be had. Not sure we ever suffered it here. Funny to think of that now.

Heh.

I think Drogba probably shades it in terms of output anyway. But when the other team had the ball he was on a completely different level to players like Bergkamp. That's half the game.

Bergkamp one of the best overseas players to ever grace the Premier League for my money. Probably only behind Henry and Ronaldo for mine.

Drogba is/was undoubtedly extremely good, but I would always probably describe him as being supremely "effective" rather than supremely "talented".

I think that's the sense in which they can't be compared. Some fans fetishise physical power and strength, others fetishise technique, and in these terms Drogba+Bergkamp are absolute extremes. So there's a lot of personal preference involved.

Van Nistelrooy is criminally underrated IMO - did what he was paid to do ad nauseam

I don't think he's underrated at all really. He was widely praised for being extremely good at what he did; probably not a stretch to say that plenty recognised him as being the best in the world at it. It's just that other than what he did, there wasn't much to his game.

Goals win matches

Anyway, wonder what he'd be worth today in the transfer market

Would have to be at least 75 mill

As Furball pointed out at the beginning of the season though. How many poaches do you get in the modern game? Sides are building around number 9s who have a lot more to their game.

People forget there was more to RVN's game than just tapping in from 4 yards - it's just we played to that strength and he excelled at it. His goal against Fulham where he ran from the halfway line springs to mind, plenty of decent long rangers back in Holland too.

Ah yes, the land where Alfonso Alves was prolific.
