*Official* English Football Season 2014-15

People forget there was more to RVN's game than just tapping in from 4 yards - it's just we played to that strength and he excelled at it. His goal against Fulham where he ran from the halfway line springs to mind, plenty of decent long rangers back in Holland too.
Yeah but I think it is fair to say that, aside from goals, RVN brought a lot less to the table than the other names in the discussion.

I'm surprised that Drogba > Bergkamp is a controversial opinion because I'd go along with that as well. Bergkamp was obviously the far better player technically, but Drogba was (IMO) more effective which ultimately is all that matters. And Uppercut's point that, without the ball, there is no comparison is a good one.

Bergkamp made things tick beautifully for that Arsenal attack but IMO Uppercut is right and Drogba shades it for output and impact in big matches.

The thing is Drogba's output wasn't that amazing. As I pointed out to start the discussion. Only had two prolific seasons in front of goal.

Well, yes, but a) Drogba's goal record is still better than Bergkamp's IIRC, and b) it's not just goal output.

Obviously you could construct a team make-up where signing Bergkamp would benefit them more than signing Drogba but basically in the majority of cases I think you're going to improve more as a team by signing Drogba than Bergkamp.

In the league wasn't it? I think the output point is with regards to Bergkamp who himself only has a one instance of more than 12 goals in a league season. In 7/11 seasons he didn't hit double-digits.

For what it's worth:

Drogba for Chelsea: 164 goals in 379 games
Bergkamp for Arsenal: 120 goals in 423 games

Amazed at how shocking Bergkamp's assist stats are per transfermarkt. What a fraud.
In fairness to Bergkamp a lot of Arsenal's best build up play went through him and he tended to find the oncoming wingers or fullbacks who'd cut it back across - kind of like Real Madrid now. Would probably have a tonne more '2nd assists'.

Goals win matches

Anyway, wonder what he'd be worth today in the transfer market

Would have to be at least 75 mill
"Goals win matches" is far too simplistic a way of looking at things.

It's a team game and van Nistelrooy's game was pretty limited when he wasn't in the penalty box. The last time Rangers scored more than 100 goals in an SPL season, we had no player who scored more than 18 goals. We did have 6 players that scored at least 10 that season though. If your side is set up to feed one prolific goalscorer, then as an opposition it becomes easier to nullify that team as a goal threat.

An out and out goalscorer isn't all that. Manchester United won 1 title out of 5 when van Nistelrooy was at the club. He then left and Manchester United immediately won the next 3.

Bergkamp was every striker's dream foil. Didn't matter if he was playing with Henry, Wiltord, Kanu or Reyes he would be insanely effective. Not prolific but capable of magic most players couldn't even dream about. Had a nasty side to him as well which we all loved too.

MugClaren sacked by Derby. No surprise there - good next job for Big Sam. Clough sacked by Sheffield United - slightly more surprising. Norwich promoted - who cares? Liverpool eyeing up Gary Monk.

If I was Liverpool i'd sack Rodgers and go for Klopp or Ancelotti. With Rodgers record in the transfer market there would be no way i'd trust him with any money again.

Taking a year off apparently. It has to be Klopp, Liverpool are his best option now the Bees have gone for someone else.
