United are the new Spurs, Spurs are the new Arsenal and Arsenal are the new United obviously.

On Shaqiri, the situation is a bit weird. Good clubs don't think that just because he's not good enough for Bayern he's not good enough for them right? Because that would be stupid. Clubs like Liverpool and Tottenham should be seriously targeting him, not letting him go to ****ing Inter and then paying twice as much for a worse version who is English.

I'd be really surprised if none of them had tried. It's very common for Bundesliga players to prefer a move to Italy than one to England, so that's what I assumed was going on. Of course if he washed up at Stoke it would be a huge WTF moment, but I can't see it happening.

Wait is Germany to Italy an actual trend? That doesn't really make any sense given they're polar opposites in many ways and are basically the most contrasting of the big five leagues. I'd have thought England would be the most similar to the Bundesliga. I have heard one rumour that he rejected Liverpool in favour of a potential move to Inter, but I think he'd be genuinely crazy if he actually did.

I just think there's so much more value in a league like the Bundesliga than trying to poach a star player of a mid table Prem team who are going to demand **** loads of cash.

Yeah it's kind of why I've liked seeing Juventus do well for the last couple of seasons. A world where they're one of the top European clubs seems much more right. AC Milan obviously need to follow suit.

Obviously Juve doing well is aligned with your stance on Marseilles

Yeah Juventus haven't actually done well. They've clearly been one of the top 6 or 7 or so in Europe for the last few years but they've not actually done well.

Yeah "very common" might be an overstatement, but it happens. I'd say the reasons are non-footballing.

I can understand a move to Italy more than I can understand one to Inter Milan, who are absolutely terrible and have been for some time. But you have to think he'd be brutal against Serie A defences. These guys make Gervinho look like Ronaldo.

Both Milan teams have for a long time now been mainly made up of old players/players who have failed in other leagues. It is no wonder they have fallen from their peak.

It is the whole league really though and it is such a shame. I know we are all supped to love German football these days but having never watched the League I find it very hard to form an opinion, let alone any sort of affinity, with any of the clubs outside Bayern and Dortmund. I grew up with Serie A and pretty much all the clubs playing in it mean something to me.

It's so weird to think that back in the late 90s even teams like Parma had really amazing squads. Crespo, Ortega, Buffon, Thuram, Cannavaro, and Conceicao etc...

More or less unthinkable to imagine players of that quality playing in Italy at all these days, let alone for a side like Parma.

And to think Rangers knocked them out of the Champions League. What a night that was.

Yeah it still takes some getting used to, particularly to a 90s kid where anyone who was anyone went to play in Italy. It's incredible thinking that the elite players of today have spent little to none of their careers in Italy when it was the biggest test for a player (particularly an attacking player).

Meh, quarter finals of the Champions League, semi finals of the Europa. They're going in the right direction and it's a vast improvement from doing **** all before that.
Maybe, but I think it's a pretty poor effort given they're walked the league each season. I mean, they've effectively done worse than Arsenal by getting played off the park by Bayern in 2013 and going out in the group the following season.

Will be really interesting to see how their tie with Dortmund goes.

Tbf even Rangers had some good players back then. Like Van Bronkhorst and...er...Tugay.
We didn't have Tugay when we knocked out Parma tbf. And he was an over-rated sand-dancer.

We did have Michael Mols pre injury though. What a player. Pretty sure Thuram's still somewhere in Govan looking for him, Mols absolutely slaughtered him that night.
